The Lostbrook Strawbs Collection Volume 4

The Bottom Line shows of December 1984 were just a warm-up for the 1985 marathon. This time we really ran away with the circus, attending nine shows in two weeks. This was my first visit to the Lone Star Cafe. It was a long, narrow rectangular room with the stage located on the long wall. Since most of the seats were off to the side, we set up shop at the bar that directly faced the stage. There were a couple of tables between the bar and the stage, but we were more comfortable on the bar stools. My recorder conveniently found a home on the bar next to my bottle of beer.

Highlights of 1985-04-02 Early Show:

I believe this was the opening night of the 1985 tour.

"Cut Like A Diamond" was a powerful opener, and I had never seen it performed live.

Three major songs were back: "Autumn," "Simple Visions," and "Hero and Heroine." I hadn't seen these in concert since 1976.

A new song, "Something For Nothing," performed here for perhaps the first time in the US. It made a powerful impression on us and was soon one of our favorites. I normally don't remember small details with great clarity, but I can still see Dave playing the chords..."The(Bm)question was(D)survival, the(A)answer was(G)myself(Em). I tried those out later at home.

No major Dave storytelling during the first set.

One possible lowlight - a guy we had met at the Bottom Line sat near us and kept yelling for the Falkland Islands joke(see Volume 3.)

Highlights of 1985-04-02 Late Show:

The club had emptied out significantly. You'll hear Terry Cassidy (Strawbs sound man) say "the place is empty." I believe he made some adjustments to the mix and though there's an improvement in the sound, the vocals were always elusive due to the layout of the Lone Star.

Dave rewarded us for "staying behind" by including six songs that were not played in the opening set. These had all been featured during the 1984 shows.

A reminder how close the bar must have looked from the stage - John Ford placed an order for drinks before "Part Of The Union." I think they were actually delivered.

While tuning for "Benedictus," Dave revealed that he is "sharing a bed with Tony Hooper," as "Richard Hudson smiles enviously."

Unfortunately, the "Falkland Islands guy" hadn't given up yet.
