The Lostbrook Strawbs Collection Volume 8
One day after their performance at Krogh's restaurant, the Strawbs appeared at My Father's Place, their second to last stop on this mini-tour. I had some doubts about the date of this show after reading Bob's story in Volume 7, especially since my tape didn't have a date on it. When all else failed, I finally decided to listen to the tape. Dave Cousins identified the day as a Sunday and stated that the band was heading home in two days. After a discussion with Bob about the layout of the venue, I am convinced that it was the Lone Star where he saw the Strawbs before booking them.
Upon listening to the tape, I initially thought I must have been lined up with Brian's amp due to the dominance of his guitar in the mix. After the first song however, you'll hear a yell to "fix the mix," and a later comment that "the guitar sounds horrible." It may have been annoying to some people at the club, but I think it makes for an interesting tape since all the subtleties of the guitar work are audible.
As usual, the highlights of the show took place during the acoustic set. We were glad to hear "Ringing Down The Years" for the first time since December. In the introduction to "You Never Needed Water," Dave informed us (for good reason I would think) that "this is not my wife's favorite song." Before "Heavy Disguise," we learned from John that "it's very hard to play" because of the "lovely smell of hamburgers up here."
I missed a tape change at the 90-minute mark, resulting in the loss of the final minute of "Something For Nothing" and all of "Cut Like A Diamond" before I finally woke up. Fortunately, I have a soundboard tape for back-up. I don't recall if I discussed the possibility of a soundboard recording with John Ford beforehand or not, but I must have done some advance planning since I wouldn't ordinarily have four tapes with me. I remember handing two tapes to John at our table before the show and watching him deliver them to the soundman. The soundboard source turned out to be piercing and shrill, but CQ has transformed it into an enjoyable listen for all of us.
