THE SUN RA ARKESTRA UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MARSHALL ALLEN
Trento, Italy
Auditorium S. Chiara
'Itinerari Jazz'
08 April 2010

Alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, now 86, is the frail looking but still authoritative leader of the Arkestra, which he’s led since Sun Ra’s death in 1993.
Marshall continues to be committed to the study, research, and development of Sun Ra's musical precepts and has launched the Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere "ghost" band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra's music, as well as composing new music.
Once regular travellers of the spaceways, they're currently stranded in the UK - and giving unscheduled extra concerts there - unable to leave the country due to the volcanic ash from Iceland.
This recording here is from an Italian gig last week. Plenty of freedom, coherence, skill, swing jazz and astral noises. And joyous good humour.
