- 1st night of a 4 night residency.
- For this exclusive event, the late jazz giants legacy band performs live, accompanying a screening of the cult favorite 1974 Afrofuturist sci-fi film "Space Is the Place", written by and starring Sun Ra. Produced by jazz musician, art curator, and former KQED producer Jim Newman, Space Is the Place was inspired by The Black Man in the Cosmos, a course taught by Sun Ra at UC Berkeley in 1971.
Filmed primarily in Oakland and San Francisco, the movie weaves together live concert footage and staged dramatic scenes with a plot concerning the salvation of black culture through space exploration, with Sun Ras music as the divine force that will save the people and usher them to a new future beyond Earth.
