On Saturday, November 18th, 2000, Suzanne Vega and four members of The Songwriter's Exchange joined Jack Hardy for a benefit performance at the Greenwich Village folk landmark The Bottom Line. Citing Jack's frequent absences -- hardly surprising for a touring folk singer/songwriter with an international following -- Hardy's landlord sought to evict him from the rent-controlled apartment that had been his home for the past quarter century -- and served as the weekly meeting place for the Tuesday-night Songwriter's Exchange for the past 17 years. The Bottom Line benefit provided a means for longtime friend Suzanne Vega, Songwriter's Exchange members Tim Robinson, Alan Orsky, Frank Tedesco and Bob Hillman, and a few hundred supportive fans to assist Jack by defraying at least a part of the considerable legal costs involved in fighting his eviction.
