NOTES:

Of all the shows of SXSW, I think this show right here easily had the most hype and anticipation for me, easily. I've never had the pleasure of seeing Tangerine Dream live in person before, though I have fantasized about it many times over the years. I always thought they would have made a great late night set at Coachella, but who knows, maybe that's still in the cards for the future? You never know.

Anyway, I remember my Dad having the Sorcerer soundtrack on vinyl when I was a kid (something he passed on to me, which I now still have sitting on my record shelf) and I was mesmerized by the cover and that ominous truck on the ragged bridge. I remember renting the movie at J&P Video up in Napa and being completely blown away by not just the film itself, but the soundtrack too. My Dad was totally a classic rock and country guy (not so much anymore I guess), but this was the one "electronica" record he owned and raved about. As I got older, I later learned Tangerine Dream, in whatever lineup they had going at the time, composed many soundtracks in their heyday, so over the years I would seek them out and listen to them, discovering more and more awesome cues and music from a group that I (and many others I'm sure/hope) consider to be "Godfathers" of electronic/synth music (right alongside Kraftwerk, etc).

To actually see their name on the bill for SXSW, something I wasn't aware of until only a couple weeks out from my trip, as bands/shows continuously get added right up until the day of in some cases, was a total shock to me. I nearly fell over! I mean I thought seeing New Order and the Zombies was good enough, but now adding a show by Tangerine Dream into the mix? Holy fuck! I knew immediately that I had to be at that show, no matter what time or what venue or what day. All other plans would be cancelled and changed as necessary, no questions asked.

The show ended up being at the Parish, and unlike the New Order show from a few days prior, I had no issue getting an "express pass" for this show. I walked from the San Jose hotel (where I was watching some bands on the SXSJ bill) on the other side of the Congress bridge all the way over to the Parish, and made it just in time for the 8pm doors. And since I had the express pass, I got to bypass the line and walked right in and got an amazing spot right in the middle of the floor (you had the option of going up stairs if you wanted - but with my festival experience and my "festival legs", that for sure wasn't happening - floor or bust for me). Granted, again, I showed up at 8pm and literally stood in the same spot more or less for the ENTIRE FUCKING night. No food, and one cup of water. Oh the torture and pain I put my body through to get a good spot and a good recording of these shows. I thought this venue was the "old" Parish (as I had never been to it - didn't attend this venue last year) but I was told by a local in the crowd that this was in fact the "new" Parish, with the old one having been torn down. That was a bit of a disappointment to hear, as the old one was supposedly haunted and I was looking forward to experiencing it alongside Tangerine Dream. Oh well.

Did I mention doors were at 8pm btw? That's important because there were four other bands/groups on before Tangerine Dream took the stage (all recorded too), including Tangerine Dream member Paul Frick's other band, Brandt Brauer Frick, and therefore Tangerine Dream didn't actually take the stage and start playing until 1AM, hence this show technically being on March 18th, rather than March 17th as the posters/bills advertised (if you want to get technical). They played a full 90 minute set though. I realize many Tangerine Dream shows in the past go 2 or even 3 hours, so 90 minutes may feel short, but for a "festival set" inside a very small venue, 90 minutes felt perfect. By the time the show finally ended at 2:30AM, the crowd had thinned out, but that was fine with me. Less talkers.

Speaking of the show, I thought it was fantastic with great sound and visuals. One thing I should mention though, only because it really bothered me and drove my cable management OCD absolutely insane (I was seriously getting anxiety over this), was that some of the cables on Thorsten's keyboards were pulled/stretched so tight with absolutely NO SLACK, that I seriously thought that either the cables were gonna snap out at any second, and/or pull the rig over given all the tension. In fact, the latter ALMOST happened early in the show. Thorsten sort of caught his keyboard and gave a huge sigh of relief before continuing on. You can actually see the cables in question in one of the photos I included with this file set. Please bring longer cables for future shows, holy shit!!!

And future shows you say? Spoiler alert, at the end of the set, Thorsten announced they are planning on a full scale US tour for later this fall. I really hope that pans out, as I would love to catch them again at their own proper show in a nice venue. I'm not going to try and name all the songs in the setlist, as I honestly have no clue about 99% of them. Their catalog is far too large for me to ever know most song names. It'd take years and a lot of trial and error to get it right, and I just don't have that time. But if anyone else does happen to know the correct song titles, please contact me and let me know. I did recognize a couple, including the opening track of Sorcerer's theme song, "Betrayal". How cool was it to open with that? Perfection I say! They also played their cover of S U R V I V E's "Stranger Things" theme song.

Overall I walked away totally blown away, by having seen one of the best shows of the entire week, maybe of the last few years for me. Did I mention the visuals yet? They had these really cool lighting and video effects playing over a projector, which at first I figured was just some MP4 file loaded onto a computer, but nope. My friend went upstairs near the end of the show and watched as a couple was creating the visuals live with different transparent paper, effects, liquids and more. Pretty amazing to think about. Just another small detail that went a long way in creating what was the best SXSW show all weekend long.

Oh and to top it all off, this was also their first US show in over 10+ years! So the show, on top of everything I've already mentioned previously, felt just that much more special due to that too. I was so happy and honored to have been a part of it. The long walk to the venue, the standing on my feet for 6+ hours, not eating any food, and the long walk back to the car (parked a few miles away) in the freezing cold rain (the weather was terribly cold this year, the complete opposite of what I experienced last year) was totally worth every bit of pain to have seen and recorded this show, and I'm happy to bring to all the fans out there. Enjoy!
