** Contrast clause RE my previous, long off-the-tracker torrent #274224 from Nov. 1, 2009: this is a MAJOR UPGRADE! Fresh November 22, 2017 azimuth perfectly adjusted transfer, now with no CD-R in lineage, pitch-corrected and Audacity'ed, plus newly created full-colour artwork (for more info see info below)**
Lineage: unknown taper's master cassette > Herb Staehr's (RIP) cassette > my TDK SA 90 cassette > fresh November 22, 2017 transfer from Sony D6C walkman (azimuth adjusted, pitch corrected and peaks checked etc.) to Olympus LS P2 PCM recorder at 44.1kH > wav > Audacity (for track marks, slight editing, auto-boosting levels etc.) > wav > FLAC (level 8) > Dime > all TYAionados!
Note: there was a minor tape flaw/dropout at 21:23 min. into "She Lies In The Morning" that I fixed the best way possible.
Sound quality: 4 (out of 6)/vg++

1) Info on my re-upload ...instead of a simple re-seed:
I already torrented this show on Nov. 1, 2009; it has been off the tracker since October 24, 2010. Now, since the show took place almost exactly 47 years ago, I was thinking of revisiting it again, and maybe re-uploading it on the occasion.
As it happened, upon ripping my old CD-R which I torrented back then, and watching the audio waves with Audacity, I noticed that the transfer (which I originally had done sometime in 2006, IIRC) was obviously dubbed too hot in places, especially for the left channel. Also, in general the whole thing sounded noticeably duller than I thought it once sounded on my cassette. Hence, I decided on the spot to do a fresh transfer with my trusty and perfectly suitable Sony D6C cassette walkman and made sure that this time as well
- the recording levels
- as the replay head's azimuth
- as the pitch
are all set PERFECTLY!
Most thankfully, this torrent did indeed turn out a CONSIDERABLE sonic upgrade and I'm really happy to get the best possible results for this to me, at least very special show. For those who may have downloaded my previous torrent and ponder hard on investing some ratio again, just please check the audio sample in comments for comparison.
2) Info on the show and tour:
For decades, the rather partial and rather inferior, once rather rare and rather expensive vinyl bootleg "Live In Concert" was the sole source to get a glimpse into that tour. Strangely so, as thanks to their fantastic and highly successful "Cricklewood Green" album from early 1970, the Woodstock movie that hit the cinemas in late March 1970, and the subsequent "Woodstock Soundtrack And More" triple album kicked out in August, TYA suddenly were catapulted to megastar status by mid 1970, especially in the US.
Accordingly, and obviously unavoidably, their tour to back their next album "Watt", released in November 1970 took them through Madison Square Garden (on Nov. 13, 1970) and other equally ...er, intimate venues. "Watt" eventually turned out almost as successful as its predecessor, reaching #21 on Billboard's US album charts and #5 in the UK. It may be guessed that this tour and album initiated perhaps TYA's all-time high in popularity, though quality-wise "Watt" sure had the unfortunate fate of having been released after "Cricklewood Green", as a contemporary reviewer quite aptly put it.
As a long-time TYA nut collecting boots & live shows since 1980, I used be after a decent sounding show from TYA's late 1970 "Watt" tour for ages. Especially with regard to the enormous tour and chart success, I've always found it very strange that no or almost no recording have turned in ages, let alone good sounding dubs. I've always yearned to hear live tracks from this album because by that time Alvin & CO. had already acquired their infamous habit of dropping new numbers from the respective sets quite quickly, so most tracks would never appear again after this tour.
Thankfully, in the late 90's my long-time TYA trading mate and world's no.1 TYA collector & connoisseur Herb Staehr got in contact with the taper of this very show here who obviously had never traded it, and was so nice to pass me a copy which I'd like to share here again. The late great Herb Staehr was the author of the still only book on TYA to date ("A Visual History", published in late 1999 and still HIGHLY recommended) - and a real good friend. He actually attended Woodstock and even appeared in a crowd shot on the Woodstock Soundtrack album. Cool. I'd like to dedicate this upload to his memory. Rock on up there, pal! Though I have hundreds of TYA shows of old, and love most of them dearly, I must admit that this here might be among my all-time fave TYA concerts, albeit being a bit on the short side.
Alvin and Co. later always claimed that playing the huge venues from 1970 on was the beginning of their end, but if there was any rot setting in at that point, you sure can not yet it make out in this very show. The relatively intimate venue of the Berkeley Community Theater sure helped matters in this respect, I guess. They did a slightly abbreviated version of "Love like A Man", which was still fresh then, the new "I'm Coming On" was done quite differently from the studio version, instead of simply rehashing their standard slow Blues "Spider In My Web", they used to make up untitled Blues numbers on the spot each night with differing lyrics (titled "Made Up Blues" for this occasion by yours truly), and tried to finally replace "I Can't Keep From Crying" by a fantastic and (IMHO) NEVER boring 20 min. version of "She Lies In The Morning". They did keep this number into early 1971 but would never again play it at this length. Obviously, the band were still eager to remain adventurous.
Of course, analog cassette copies of this show got into circulation via Herb and me, and a few years down the road and up the analog copy generation line someone "released" his CD-R version titled "The Lost 'Watt' tour Concert", complete with color cover. Of course clones off that version can be downloaded from various sites elsewhere but that version - and its clones - all stem from a higher gen. copy, plus have the track sequence incorrectly shuffled. No idea why but who gives a frog, anyway...
The recording for this torrent didn't need any EQ'ing (...er, "remastering", these days); the pitch on my cassette ran almost perfect so I only had to speed it up a wee little; with its 79:56 min. the show fits equally perfectly on one CD-R, and the sound quality is more than acceptable for its age. Can it get much better? Well, not as long as the taper finally kicks a straight digital copy off his master into circulation, I'd say. :-)
BTW, the band's then record company DERAM really didn't spare any effort on the album and granted not only yet another gatefold cover but also - and for the second and last time after "Cricklewood Green" a TYA release would come with a large full-colour poster! I took the liberty and used all that lavish packaging for the newly created artwork.
Please do NOT sell this show or spread it in lossy formats - otherwise: trade, share, collect and enjoy! Always looking forward to your comments and possibly even further info...
