The trade:
Though I have been a TYA nut and live show collector since 1980, I never knew they played the famed Montreux Festival again since their first stint in 1969 - which was documented by a TV b'cast of two of their numbers - until I got hold this thingy here in 2008. I received this show from a collector who asked me not to trade/swap it further until I would get the "green light" from him. When I tried to approach him again a year or two later to find out if he would still not want me to pass it on, I found he had meanwhile closed down his trading site and removed his Email addy icon so I couldn't contact him any longer. Since he doesn't trade anymore I take it he won't mind me passing on this show in order to make other fans happy. Thanks for this great show though, mate - just in case you learn of my sharing.

The "Super Pop 1971" Festival:
After having been approached by the director of the Montreux tourist office and asked to do something against the local boredom, Claude Nobs (the manager of the "Montreux Jazz Festival") decided to broaden the spectrum of his shows in 1971. He established a series of Rock and Blues shows with major artists who appeared throughout that year, such as Led Zeppelin, John Mayall (in his commercial prime then), Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Depp Purple and - look here - Ten Years After!

However, aside of the obviously occurring drug probs that came with these bands (or so it was perceived by the authorites), something must unfortunately have attracted this one famous-infamous stupid with his flare gun who "burned down the gambling house" during The Mothers' December 4, 1971 show which prevented Peep Durple to to their scheduled show, thereafter. Ok, Purple and R & R lore have documented this dramatic incicent sufficiently well, I imagine.

The show and recording:
When TYA played the Montreux Casino in March of that year, things were obviuosly still fine though as this recording proves. The sound is very good for its age, there's no oversaturation nor it it "reverb city", no yelling of drunk arseholes can be heard, no Altamontic riots, no fireworks - you name it. Hence, we get a real good sounding show - and a pretty long one, to boot.

In early 1971, TYA introduced a few numbers that would later turn up on their "A Space In Time" album such as "One Of These DaYs". And as great as the official 1973 live version is, I think the version they did in 1971 - and particularly at this show here - epitomises TYA's almost proverbial coolness - at least in my humble opinion. Can it get any more nonchalant this version (listen to the sample)?

Disclaimer:
This show is "virgin". It's uncirculated (at least to my 30 years of live shows trading knowledge), plus no editing, no remastering, no tweaking whatsoever was done to this recording simply because it's not necessary. The show sounds FINE this way. PLEASE leave it like that other than for strictly personal use, OK?

Uploaded to Dime in February 2011 DocDondy with many thanks to the unknown taper and my source and trading partner for sharing.

NOT FOR SALE - Trade & sharing only. Yes, that means especially you **again**, Sh*tyoda F*ckords and likeminded crookleggers!

DO NOT spread a version of this upload if you fumbled on it (i.e. if you did more remastering, doctoring, tinkering), and DO NOT spread this show in lossy formats, either, OK? OK???? Thanks (sigh, well see...).
