Special Notes:
This was the second time TYA played in Ternitz. First time they were here in April 2008 and this marked the begin of a concert series by classic Rock groups there and in the neighbour town Pottschach (later on bands such as Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Canned Heat and so on followed over the years). Now, they were the first band of the bunch to return here, and interestingly enough, they weren't - this is the 50% changed new lineup with Marcus Bonfanti on guitar and vocals, and Colin Hodgkinson on bass, replacing Joe Gooch and original TYA-member Leo Lyons, who went on concentrating full time on their former TYA-side-project 'Hundred Seventy Split'. Needless to say, Colin doesn't sound like Leo on bass (most recognizable in 'Schoolgirl' and 'I'm going Home'), but of course he does a very good job, as does Marcus, who with his Gibson SG and its humbuckers is closer to the sound of Alvin Lee than Joe Gooch IMO. His singing is also smoother, esp. in 'I'm going Home', however his voice is deeper and rougher.
Actually, if I hadn't the recording with its characteristic audience chatter around me, I'd not have much memories of some happenings other than I was rockin' out with a mate and two girls at and until long after the gig... and having a drink or two :D ... (hence the bootleg title).
Let's look back:
Notes & How to identify my recording:
Sometimes during clapping a 'click' sound can be heard... I think that's me clapping with one hand with a ring on my other hand holding a bottle. In 'Sugar the Road', just when Ric's drums kick in you can hear someone next to me shouting "Geht scho!" ("Let's go!"). At 3:46 during the harp solo in 'One of these Days' you can hear a yell "Heeey!". After 'I'm coming on' Marcus says "Here's a song you all know, I'm sure!" and you can hear me saying "Hear me calling!". Then, after 'Nowhere to run' he says "Dankeschn, thank you so much!". At 4:00-4:10 during 'Me and my Baby' you can hear me and one of the girls having a short chat (it was about the drink she just brought!) - not very high in the mix, but still clearly audible!. At the beginning of '50.000 Miles beneath my Brain' you can hear a guy brabbling "Das Beste ist...!" ("The best is..") and me saying the title of the song. Around 2:50 in '50.000...' you can hear a male voice talking a few words. After the song Marcus says "Dankeschn, thank you so much!" and then "Alright ladies and gentlemen, we gonna leave you (...)" and me guessing "Schlagzeugsolo?!" ("Drum Solo?!") but in fact he announces Colin Hodgkinson and his bass solo - which was amazing, him using his bass like a lead guitar! Before 'Working on the Road' you can hear a female voice saying "I hoid's ned!" and a male voice, tongue-in-cheek "I hoid's aa ned... nimmer laung...! Na." ("I don't hold it!" & "I don't hold it either... not much longer!... Well ok!" - I had to hand over my bottle as my bladder wanted me to go to the toilet and the girl and the guy jokingly refused to take it (of course my friend took it in the end), and I also hung my recorder around his neck; at the beginning of 'Working on the Road' you can hear him commenting regarding the beer "Kaunn maximal passieren, dass i's aufteilt hob und dass's laa is!" (~"Maximum that can happen is that I've shared it and that it's empty then!") - but of course he did not. Usually I avoid drinking much before or during a concert so that I can avoid this situation, but on the one hand it just was 'one of these days' when it happens and on the other hand it wasn't very hard to get out and in again, either! At around 3:27 you can hear a few crackles which probably was me taking over the recorder again when I came back. Towards the end of the song you can hear us and the people around chanting "Hey, hey, hey, hey...!". After 'Working on the Road' Marcus says "Dankeschn, ladies and gentlemen!" and then somebody yells "Ooooohyeah!" and me shouting "Hobbit!". Marcus continues "Ladies and gentlemen, I wanna introduce you to a guy (...)" and you can hear me saying "Ric Lee!". After the 'Hobbit', Ric comes to the front and asks "How are you doin' tonight? We haven't played a gig since 9th of August... it's hard work. Well, this man's works every night of the week... this man's twice a night... apparently he's a bit younger than me!" pointing to his younger bandmates. Later he says "Well thanks for bein' here, we appreciate it, it's really good to see you! It's been a long time I think!", speaking about the previous concert at this venue "It's been something like seven years... here in Ternitz!" and you can hear me saying "2008!", before he introduces his bandmates, during which you can hear us toasting us and them. During the intro of 'Standing at the Station' with the railroad sound you can hear me commenting "Da Bahnhof is do drben!" ("The station's over there!"), as the station is just a mere 200 metres away from the venue. During the song, from 6:40 onwards you can hear my mate talking to me, rather low in the mix "Jetzt... jetzt homma an Fla gmocht! ... Jetzt host mindestens 3 Saftln!" (~"Now we made a mistake... Now you have at least 3 drinks!" - I believe I still had a bottle of beer and my mate brought another round for us, but I still had another drink with the girl! (guess how I would hold these 3!))After the song Marcus says "Dankeschn, thank you so much!" and during the following outro tape (railroad sound again) you can hear me saying "Eisenbahn!" and the characteristic 'click-click---click-click' noise from my ring hitting my glass bottle. Before 'Good Morning little Schoolgirl' Marcus says "Here's a song I know you know!" and you can hear me saying "Oh!". Right when Chich Churchill starts the keyboard riff to 'Help me', Marcus says "Thank you so much, Ternitz, thank you so much, Austria! ... We have one more song for you, is that ok?". During the harp solo in 'Help me', from around 4:10 onwards you can hear the girl next to me talking and mentioning Alvin Lee, that she's seen him years ago. Then, at 9:18 she says "A guade Stimm hot er aa!" ("He's got a good voice, too!"). Before 'I'm going Home' starts with the famous guitar lick, Marcus says "Ladies and Gentlemen... it's very late!... It's time to go home!". Before 'Choo choo Mama' he asks "One more?" three times, and me saying "Choo choo!". During the closing chords of the song he says "Thank you so much! Dankeschn! We see you all again!".
It still amazes me how how I got my signed concert poster to home safe and sound with my bicycle some two hours later, kissing the house wall with my cheek after I managed to get through the fence door... Oh, well :)
