THE BREW (UK)
- March 22, 2010 -
Kulturfabrik, Roth, Germany
** ON STAGE AUDIENCE MASTER, MWM 0156 **
>> A young UK-POWERTRIO in the tradition of JIMI, STEVIE, LED ZEPPELIN,
the WHO, PINK FLOYD etc. - AWESOME SOUNDING ! SIMPLY A MUST ! << w/ samples

Preliminary remark 1:

There are a couple bands with the same name - "The Brew" - around.

This torrent here has NOTHING TO DO with the Massachusetts-based quartet The Brew, an US jam-band
cooking up a musical melting pot that combines their roots in classic rock, adding ingredients of prog,
jazz, reggae, world beat, indie, funk and orchestral pop, sometimes in the course of a single song.
http://www.thebrew.biz/

BUT:

This torrent gives you a fine introduction to ONE OF THE HOTTEST band around, a British blues
& rock power trio - one of the most exciting, vibrant and talked about bands of recent times.
Hailing from Grimsby (UK) and influenced by the experimental music of the 60’s, the trio have
transfixed audiences wherever they have performed, while also being tipped for greatness by many
leading music authorities, both in the UK and Europe. They are touring extensively throughout
Europe, their fan-base is rapidly increasing as the standing ovations which follow each capacity-
filled gig testifies. Appearances on both national TV and Radio stations in Belgium, Germany,
Poland, Spain and France have confirmed the band as one of Britain’s finest musical exports.

Preliminary remark 2:

As far as I know NONE of this recording was used commercially...SO FAR ! ;-)

This upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

Parental Advisory:

This is one of my shorter descriptions. Promised...

All the used and indexed four-letter-words are essential necessary
in this torrent-text here to keep the whole thing...hmmm...flowing... ;-)

About "The Brew (UK)":

The Brew is bassist and vocalist Tim Smith, son Kurtis Smith (21 !) on drums and young
phenom Jason Barwick (20 !) on guitar and lead vocals. A generation-spanning line-up that
fuses elements of classic rock from the 60s and 70s with the sounds of today. As the band's
senior member explains, the explosive mixture heard on their latest album 'A Million Dead Stars'
is meant to appeal to both older and younger music fans: "Our style of playing is more of
an echo from the past. But the production and sound we're striking for is a modern sound. As
somebody once said, there's no future without the past. We hope to get the best of both worlds.".

Following their eponymous debut in 2006 and an EP entitled 'Fate and Time' a year later, this
up-and-coming British trio broke out internationally with 2008's highly acclaimed 'The Joker'.
Seemingly overnight, the band was filling thousand-seat venues in countries like Poland and
Spain and making a high-profile TV appearance on Germany's prestigious Rockpalast music programme.
Their recent signing with the label Jazzhaus Records coincided with an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to record in world-renowned Chapel Studios with veteran producer Chris West. The goal of the sessions
was to take the youthful exuberance and energy The Brew generates onstage and transport it onto record.
A tall order to be sure. But 'A Million Dead Stars' delivers.

For one thing, the band had already road-tested the songs. "We write songs we can play live" explains
Tim Smith, "and we record songs we've been playing live. If it doesn't work live, we won't record it.".
Fans will instantly recognize a number of tracks that were a part of the set list throughout 2009: the
cracking and defiant opener "Every Gig Has a Neighbour" (with its anthemic "Turn it up, play it loud!"
chorus), the unrelent-ing "Wrong Tunes" as well as an excellent version of the lyrical and poignant "KAM".

Some familiar elements remain integral to the sound. The ghost of Jimi Hendrix inhabits the bluesy riffs
of "Surrender it All." Jason Barwick's acoustic playing on "Mav the Rave" and "Monkey Train" recalls
Jimmy Page. There's even a nod to Malcolm Young (or rather, several nods) on the title track. Other
songs, how-ever, show the band expanding their territory, exploring more melodic themes while giving
Barwick an opportunity to come into his own as a vocalist. In fact, the entire album serves as a kind
of coming out party. The twenty-year-old Barwick only recently assumed duties as the band's lead
vocalist, but is already showing signs of greatness. His shining moment on 'A Million Dead Stars'
comes on "Change in the Air" a standout tune not quite like anything the band has done before.

Drawing on his experience with classic rockers Status Quo and Uriah Heep as well as Britpop icons
Richard Ashcroft and The Verve, producer Chris West has helped create a more varied album with
intricately layered, more fully developed songs. There's no better example than "A Million Dead Stars".
In its seven-and-a-half mind-boggling minutes, the song provides the set with a rousing climax – and
gives us a first glimpse of the musical heights these talented artists are poised to climb.
Until now, The Brew has straddled a musical fence, finding friends in both the classic rock and
traditional blues camps. There are pitfalls in constantly being compared to artists of the past – as
Tim Smith and his two young bandmates are well aware. That's one reason they've worked hard to create
something all their own, and to reveal more of their unique personalities in the process. "I think a
band searches for its direction for acertain period of time" Smith reflects, "On A Million Dead Stars,
it's very much our own sound.". At the same time, they chose not to complicate things or get too
far away from what they do onstage.
"For us, it's rock 'n' roll. We live it, breathe it, sleep it and eat it.".

The Brew (UK) – "A Million Dead Stars" European Tour 2010

Album "The Joker".

"A Million Dead Stars"

Opener "Every Gig Has a Neighbour" (mit dem hymnischen "Turn it up, play it loud!"-Chor), das

So lebt
z.B. der Geist von Jimi Hendrix das bluesige Riffs von "Surrender it All". Jason s Barwick akustisches

THE BREW live!(thk)
Gitarrist/Lead-Sänger Jason Barwick (* 10.6.1989) wird mit Jimi Hendrix und Jimmy Page verglichen;

ihrem Debüt „The Brew" (2006) und dessen Nachfolger „The Joker" (2008) eingeschlagenen Weg fort:
ihrer Vorbilder Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Stevie Ray Vaughan plus einige zeitgenössische

And finally about THIS CONCERT here:

verkrampft, selten hat man beispielsweise Hendrix’ "Little Wing" so ballastlos gehört. Ebenso ziehen

Melanie - Roth

Went to tonight's concert in Augsburg. Did not know much of the band bevorehand.
So I expected nothing but saw an astonishing show. This was absolutely great.
Sophisticated playing combined with the power of early Led Zep, Cream or The Who.
Some day Jason, Kurtis and Tim may be named apparent heirs of Jeff Beck, Keith Moon
and John Entwistle. Yeah, you guys are that good. Thanks for this remarkable evening.
Peter - Augsburg

Awesome (as always) gig in Dortmund, FZW! See you soon! Btw: It would be really great,
if you guys could play Red House next time! Your Little Wing is pure magic, best cover
of this song I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot)!
Andreas - Dortmund

Hi Guys! Yesterday I saw you for the second time after autumn last year. And in Dortmund
it was so great, so amazing, so unbelievable! You are on the road of rock & roll, please
try to go on for years and years! Your music style is so powerful, the incredible guitar
playing by Jason, the unbelievable drums of Kurtis and all to embed in never breaking up
bassline of Tim! So great! Thank you again for coming to Germany and I hope to see you soon.
MAYBE NEXT TIME !!
Jens - Bad Oeynhausen

About the venue & the concert:

This concert is part of the "19. Rother Bluestage", and was planned to happen at the
"Posthorn", a pub, and in bygone days a brewery ( "The Brew" at "the Brewery"...hahaha..)
in Roth-Eckersmühlen. But they had to relocate it to "Kulturfabrik" straight in Roth
because of the incredible public demand for tickets ! Concert begin was postponed just
a quarter of an hour (!!) to 8:15 pm to get all the "unoriented" people from Posthorn
over here and the band started absolutely to the tick (!!!). At least the 'new' venue
was almost completely filled, and the band played in front of a good, sometimes decent
and mighty impressed crowd - the more the concert progressed - extremely enthusiastic,
and at the end the audience went bananas - mad as a hatter, crazy & wild...
This recording is a result of both - the stunning performance of all three musicians - and
the analogical crowd behaviour... and let me add that there had been a real lot of journalists
and newspaper writers plus press photographers, and a professional team filming the whole show.

http://www.kulturfabrik.de/

The capacity of this venue is 870 people, standing, in the so called "Saal", the main room.
And there is a beautiful large stage, with a professional lightning system - so this place
is regularely used for the 'big acts' during the blues days, and throughout the whole year.
Also interesting for you might be that this fine venue is completely under the command of
two really nice ladies - and they're doin' a damn fine job (and i'm a damn male chauvi...)!

My son invited me, as we've seen the Brew's "Rockpalast" TV-concert 2009 together and he was, himself
playing guitar as hobby, always interested in the music of my generation (& in my very own collection, so
i'm a PROUD dad...), deeply affected by this young band, as the two 'Youngsters' are nearly in his age.

And on our way to the venue we nearly stumbled in Jason Barwick and Kurtis Smith, so Andy, knowing them
from photos, videos, their records etc.pp. introduced us (i have to confess that i thought them being
milksops, young underaged concert vistors, wet behind their ears, at first sight...MAN WAS I WRONG !).

We had a nice conversation of some lenght, at the end accompanied by Kurtis' father Tim, needing some
caffeine and nicotine - all three are some of the nicest musicians from Great Britain i've ever met,
with this very specific kind of humor - and together we reminisced last years Rockpalast, and all what
happened afterwards, public reactions and more concert requests - plus their German gigs together with
the Randy Hansen trio. And they THANKED US for coming (isn't this utterly crazy ??), they still cannot
believe the incredible & stunning audience reaction in Germany, all over tarnation. We talked a bit about
their taste - musically spoken, and they confirmed all those above written influences - BUT they wanted
to straighten out that they are NO COVER-BAND (playing their heroes note for note...), they are JUST
INFLUENCED by all those bands...and there is a whole LOT of Jason even in the guitar solos of those
Henrix-covers, and another whole LOT of Kurtis in his drum- and percussion-works during the Bonzo-the-
beast solo. So this is the way i wrote it in the setlist: "influenced by...in the tradition of...".

They finally promised - and we truly got it all - a lot of fun in the tradition of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie
Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page (check the violin bow), Pete Townshend (the windmill), mixed with John Bonham
and Keith Moon eccentric style & power, and more than a touch AC/DC, Pink Floyd and and and...BUT IN
THE END WE GOT AN INCREDIBLE TIGHT "THE BREW" CONCERT with completely all of Jason, Kurtis & Tim.

They performed, with an incredible joy of playing, a wide selection of their own songs "influenced by",
and also the two Hendrix coversongs - showed their incredible instrumental skills and their fine taste.
All jumped like rubber balls across the stage (even the drummer...), always in action, and to cut a long
story short, they delivered one of the best concerts of this genre (heavy power trios...) since the
mindblowing tour of the Jeff Healey trio over here in 1989, IMO - and THAT IS DEFINITELY A REFERENCE !!

To crown all this, they finally came back for a second encore, and plugging his white (actually it is
something between beige and aged ivory...) Fender Stratocaster to his Marshall amp, Jason noticed that
the top has passed away during the very last notes of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". Glad they had a
spare amp there, so they could use this substitute now to continue - it's all on tape...

Summary: the best way to spend an joyful and satisfying evening/night for under 15 Euros !!
(and i am NOT talking about these cheapo bl**jobs at those layby's behind the Czech border...)

About the recording:

Met fellow DIME member "hhtfp" (maybe you know him and his extraordinary recordings - via his friend and
uploader "helm555"...) inside, so there is definitely a second recording, from the middle of the room
between stage and mixingbord, inmidst of the crazy crowd. Get it as soon it's up here (i'll sure do...).

The (rented?) PA system was a bit frustrating for me, just three (quite small) midrange/tweeter speakers
hanging on the topmost horizontal stage crossbeam (under the ceiling), pointing angular downward in the
middle of the room, and two larger woofer/subwoofers on the floor, direct under the stage...

As there was no check for whatsoever at the gates, no barriers in front of the stage and absolutely no
security, (and knowing that "hhtfp" recorded from the (hopefully) sweet spot) we decided to try some kind
of onstage recording. The trusty portable Sony DAT recorder TCD-D8 was lying hidden under a shirt direct
behind (from his point of viewing) Jason's monitor boxes, the left microphone capsule was pointing
straightforward to his Marshall guitar amp, the right one was fixed on his monitors to get the rest.

An estimated guess about the recording level and the D8 remote control...the result is here, RAW and
absolutely DIRECT IN YOUR FACE, almost as good as possible. A few clappers here and there, but as the
music WAS SO LOUD there...the recording is maybe two times a little on the hot side (glad i used the
"Rock" version microphones that night!), but not very distracting.

At home i mixed 30 percent of the left channel to the right, and 30 percent of the right to the left to
get a decent "stereo" result, accentuated the spoken parts, normalizing, and here it is...ALL FOR FREE !!

Attached in the folder are some fotos and scans.

Another dear buddy in DIME, real-O-mind (G2), usually writes:

It is what it is - "It ain't perfect, but it ain't bad"

Nothing to add, except:

GET THIS ONE HERE - NOW & ASAP !!

FOR THE FIRST TIME OUT OF OUR ARCHIVE (hahaha...),
COMPLETELY UNTRADED (so far...), SLIGHTLY MASTERED
(absolutely nothing done with the sound, EQ etc...).

PLEASE ENJOY!

CRANK UP YOUR STEREO !!

Grosser Saal,
Kulturfabrik,
Roth, Germany

Roth bei Nürnberg is a town in in the northern part of Bavaria called Franconia, it's the
capital of the district (Landkreis) Roth, and is located about 25 km south of Nuremberg.
The town was first mentioned in documents in the year 1060, but settlements at its location
date back much further. During the Middle Ages the town was given the right to grant asylum
within the city walls. Later this tradition attracted Huguenot refugees who had to flee
France because of religious persecution. They brought with them knowledge about the making
of wires and founded an industry in Roth which exists until today. It plays host to a yearly
Jazz & Blues festival and the (now defunct..."Quelle") ....whatsoever Challenge Triathlone.

My dear buddy Ken "TheCommish" usually writes (and hey, he's damn right):
If you decide to download this show, won't you please consider posting a comment
on the show's board? It only takes a moment, and believe me, it takes A LOT longer
to prepare/upload a show for others to enjoy than it does to download and run...

You know, our friend Dave T says: "There's always more to come..."
And i'll promise you to keep MY/OUR tapes coming...
