Hi all :) Given how popular was the previous (2004) Cure Coachella recording by this same taper, we both (and some of my fellow Cure fans…) thought this one should definitely follow! It’s quite different though :) I commented before how amazed I am at my friend’s ability to harvest these crystal clean SBD-like captures at festivals… But 2004 felt intimate (did I say something about Robert in my living room?) - this one is anything but! - it’s BIG. Some serious Simon action. Guitars. YET - still free of audience obnoxiousness that plagues so many festival tapes! So I’m sure you will enjoy the sound of this guy. There was NO MASTERING done here - I just fixed the tags and a little electronic glitch in the middle of one song. I considered moving a couple of track marks but decided against messing with the whole thing for the sake of a couple of drum beats.
Now - this is a special ‘infamous’ show when… The Cure played 40 min past curfew until they were …’unplugged’. Basically, at 12:30 AM as they started that last encore Robert says ‘We are only allowed to play 1 song - HUH!’ <- ‘Huh’ meant that they continued from ‘Three Imaginary Boys’ to ‘Fire in Cairo’ to ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ at which point the lights on stage went on, the screens went off and the main speakers popped as they were being shut down (you DO hear that). However, they continued through this song and on through ‘Jumping Someone Else’s Train’ on stage speakers! You hear guitars, bass, drums very well on this tape (thanks to the taper’s location!!) - but you also hear the vocals fade and the audience carrying on with the words and clapping along. Finally, as they begin ‘Grinding Halt’ (the 5th of ‘1 song’ as per Robert), stage speakers go out too - you still hear Jason drumming away for a bit :) This is a remarkable capture of the whole thing! Including audience participation in the end and a random ‘Fuck you!’ aimed at the festival rules somewhere in the midst of this mess :) LOVE IT!
ENJOY!
