I'm going to try to seed some rare-ish Monk shows from my collection. This
week I'm going to seed five shows (one per day) from 1967, the year of
Monk's Nonet. I'll probably also seed a few more shows the following week.
Any attempts to clean up the sound on these old recordings is welcomed,
appreciated, and encouraged. I hope everyone enjoys them!

Thelonious Monk Nonet
Liederhalle
Mainz, Germany
November 8, 1967

Solid sound here, given the age of the recording. Definitely in the A-
range.

01 intro
[2:31]
02 Ruby My Dear (quartet) [7:07]
03 Don't Blame Me (solo piano) [5:03]
04 Rhythm-a-ning (C.Terry - trumpet) [4:46]
xx I Mean You / Theme (nonet) [officially released*]
05 Straight, No Chaser
[9:11]
06 Evidence
[18:08]
07 Oska.T [18:13]

*Released in a 4:16 version on "Straight No Chaser" (the movie soundtrack
album - Columbia CK 45358). Sheriden notes that "this was spliced from
several sources, including an on-tour rehearsal, being drawn from the
Charlotte Zwerin/Bruce Ricker film documentary, "Straight No Chaser."
The version I have is 24:27 and the real gem of this show, as all members
of the nonet take solos. I have no means of splicing out the officially
released portions, and I am thus unable to upload them. This seems pretty
rare, since the 4:16 version of I Mean You is the only portion of this
concert catalogued by Sheridan.

Lineup:
Thelonius Monk - Piano
Charlie Rouse - Tenor Sax
Ray Copeland - Trumpet
Johnny Griffin - Tenor Sax
Jimmy Cleveland - Trombone
Phil Woods - Alto Sax
Clark Terry - Trumpet
Larry Gales - Bass
Ben Riley - Drums

lineage:
FM recording > ? > flac on DVD in trade > Dime

NOTE: I'm always a bit wary when seeding older jazz, because it can be tough
to tell what has been officially released. I have checked as thoroughly as
I know how. However, if you do find that this or any other shows that I've
seeded has been officially released, please PM me so that I can alert the
Dime authorities and have it taken down.

Though I'm posting these Monk shows mostly for the joy of sharing music, I
also have a somewhat more insidious motive. I'd like to scare up some
other Monk material that is out there, but hasn't really made it to a
wide audience. Most specifically, I'm interested in the shows below, but
please post any Monk you can, if you think others will enjoy it:

May 6, 1961 - Manchester, England
May 10, 1961 - Bern, Switzerland
March 8, 1962 - Paris, France
September 23, 1962 - Apollo Theater, NYC
March 1, 1963 - Baden-Baden, Germany
March 8, 1965 - Sendesaal, Bremen, Germany
March 14, 1965 - Marquee Club, London, England
August 21, 1965 - Place Des Arts, Montreal, Canada
April 4, 1966 - Warsaw, Poland
February 1969 - Paris, France (solo TV performance)
November 14, 1970 - Jazz Expo, Paris, France
