Well, I'm finally getting around to digitizing my 700+ cassettes (at my wife's insistence--she wants them out of the house), so I'm going to start posting some goodies here. I taped many a show in the Toronto area from the late '80's to the late '90's, and also recorded a lot of radio broadcasts, mostly from CFNY, 102.1 in Toronto. Hope you stumble across something you like, or even a show you were at!
They Might Be Giants--Count Basie Theatre, Red Bank, New Jersey, Oct. 17, 1994
My girlfriend at the time was a huuuge TMBG fan, but had never seen them. Which led to this phone conversation I had one afternoon at work.
"Hi honey. How far away is New Jersey?"
"Um, I'm not sure, I've never been. At least 6 hours, I would think. Why?"
"Well, I really wanted to see They Might Be Giants, so I called TicketMaster, and the only show they had listed was in New Jersey. So I bought 2 tickets."
Good thing I owned my own business at the time and could arrange a couple of days off, I guess. It turns out Red Bank is actually almost 9 hours away from our home in southern Ontario, so we left a day early and arrived the night before. We stopped at a local donut shop to figure out where to stay for the night. The US phone book confused me, as it had city names after every entry, and I had no idea what was close. New Jersey seemed to be one long strip mall with a new town sign every few miles. And no left turns. But I digress. Anyway, we asked the waitress if she knew of any decent, reasonable hotels in the area, and she turned out to be the town bicycle..not only did she know lots of them, she told us their rates, as well. Helpful, but scary.
Next day, we shopped around town, caught an instore performance (see separate torrent), and saw an amazing TMBG show from the 3rd row, near the stacks. The tape came out great. After the show, we met Flansborough, and told him we had driven all the way from Toronto for this. "Really?",he said. "We're playing there in a couple of weeks."
Now you tell us. Anyway, a good time was had by all, and now you get to enjoy the show too!
