The band was having issues with their in-ears early in the set, but this didn't hinder the show at all. This was part of the tour
for the belated 30th anniversary of Flood, so the full album was played, albeit mixed throughout the set. They also substituted
performances of "They Might Be Giants" and "Hearing Aid" with playback of newly-recorded studio versions of the songs. The band
was joined by the Tricerachops Horns (Stan Harrison, Dan Levine, and Mark Pender) for many of the songs, which is always a
welcome addition. They each got a solo showcase before and after "Istanbul," which culminated in Pender holding a note for an
impossibly long time. Great stuff. I was also thrilled to hear "How Can I Sing Like a Girl?," which I hadn't seen them play in
the other 8 TMBG shows I've been to over the years. Lots of great banter from the Johns throughout, including a story about how
Linnell and his wife spent their honeymoon in Charleston with food poisoning. There were also a few references to the Oscars,
which were taking place the same night.
I recorded from the front row, right in front of Linnell's keyboard, and I'm really happy with how it came out. The sound at the
Music Hall is always fantastic.
