OldNeumanntapr Notes:
(This set is tracked as one long jam, with several themes interspersed.)
This was my first Gov't Mule show. The plastic clamps on my microphone stand broke as I was setting up, but I was able to patch into Dan's KM-184's. The etree listing is wrong however. They list a Lunatec V2 mic preamp when it was actually a Lunatec 316 studio model that Dan had rigged to run off of a car battery. He brought a hand truck into the show with all of his gear in anvil cases. Dan was first in line and I was right behind him. Wow! I patched my D7 into his DA-P1. I was so impressed with the sound of the Neumanns that I sold my Nakamichi's and bought a set of Neumanns later that year! We were up in the left balcony and Dan had his KM-184s spread about a foot and a half in an OFTF pattern. This recording SHINES, especially during the acoustic opening set with Tim Reynolds and Warren. (I was Mesmerized by Tim's playing, with all the electronic effects and sampling.)
The Catalyst has two balconies on either side of the stage, and I think the balconies sound much better than the floor does. This is the show that my buddy Jack, the dwarf, left the show with some woman he met and I never saw him again for the rest of the night. I waited until 3 am in Santa Cruz and he never showed up, so I left. At 6 am when I had just gotten home my phone rang and it was him, drunk, saying, "Where are you?" He took a bus home the following day and was mad at me but hey, I waited until 3 am. What was I going to do? He gave me gas for years about leaving him in Santa Cruz. I looked for him EVERYWHERE, and remember looking for him out in the back of the Catalyst and there was a taper who I saw give Warren Haynes a DAT tape case. He looked confused and opened it up, and inside was a bomber joint!
