Comments:
This was a most historical night for New Orleans funk. As part of Tipitina's week-long 25th anniversary party, these seminal musicians came together for two hours of the dankest funk to hit the Big Easy since the book of Genesis. Heavy on the Meters/Neville groove, these old and new school locals came out for a crowd that jumped and jived in jubilant disbelief. Though Dr. John, touted on some flyers, was a no-show, the crowd was treated to outsider Robert Randolph's upbeat licks teamed with June Yamagishi's unparalleled axe-work. Yamagishi's guitar may be the best part of this show- and he may be the best guitarist you've never heard of. The rhythmm section of George Porter Jr.'s bass bombs and Stanton Moore's carnival beat keeps the groove grounded while the Dirty Dozen Horns et al. on the brass creates a stunning display of New Orleans "Uptown Groovin'".

The setlist was heavy-hitting, with powerful R&B numbers (an infectious "Papa was a Rolling Stone"), and some re-tooled classics ("Wind Cries Mary" ala Professor Longhair; "Voodoo Chile") enveloped in tight jams to drive the evening, while Houseman's showmanship and soul brought some lively humor to the mix. A 16-minute+ "I'll Fly Away" brought the house DOWN with its carnival flavor- the band clearly enjoyed playing this one, as Cyril and Ivan Neville got up to dance with handkerchiefs, Robert Randolph got his gospel groove on and the band just didn't want to stop...

Improvisational, experimental, and inspired by the spirits of the groove...

This high-quality AUD source incorporates the moving crowd moments as well as the multi-layered musicianship all in a recording that is quite good by Tipitina's standards. This once-in-a-lifetime show is a treasure to any fan of New Orleans funk!
