From the WBEZ website:
A consummate bandleader and dynamic percussionist, "El Rey" or "The King," as he was known, blazed a trail through both Latin and jazz music history. He became the best-known ambassador of Afro-Cuban music around the world, with ceaseless touring and an unprecedented number of albums (somewhere in the vicinity of 120) in the course of a career that spanned some six decades.
Puente is also credited with over 400 songs and some 2000 arrangements. And he appeared in films, including Radio Days and The Mambo Kings, as well as hit television programs like The Cosby Show and The Simpsons.
Puente had an intense, but engaging stage presence that made him a favorite with crowds all over the world. His influence extended well beyond Latin music and jazz to modern Latin-rock and performers like Carlos Santana, who made Puente's "Oye Como Va" a big hit and one of his best known numbers.
Puente performs this classic, as well as landmark tunes from his early days and favorites from later in his career in this fiery set recorded at the 1990 Viva Chicago Festival.
