boombox's notes june 2025:
Opening act for the tour was a young talented singer-songwriter with a great voice, especially for her own country blues-tinged material, which includes everything from a song written for her Music GCSE to co-writes with Chas Jankel. Definitely one to watch out for, especially with a band. I bought my ticket for this gig when it was first announced, which was lucky as a featured spot on Jools Holland's 2024/2025 tour meant the word got out on Toby pretty quickly. At the ripe old age of 20, he already has quite a résumé, including an Olivier Award winning stint as Zack Mooneyham in the original West End run of 'School of Rock', playing with BB King's band and at the age of 14, guesting with Joe Bonamassa at the Royal Albert Hall. His playing is clearly influenced by the greats, but he has a more contemporary blues-rock sound than most of the new crop of young British blues acts. Big shout out to his band too, who were excellent.
Sound-wise, this came out very well, though I did add a slight touch of EQ as the mix from the artists' sound guy was a bit flat. Drums are maybe a bit higher in the mix too, but the room is very small and I was very close to the stage. Odd few coughs and sniffs around me, but this did not require much work at all.
Please go out and see these artists and buy the albums - it's tough out there for new acts and for small venues.
