Preliminary remark 2:

As far as I know NONE of this recording was ever used commercially.

This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

The talented singer/songwriter Todd McBride:

Those familiar with the Athens music scene, may remember Todd
as the former vocalist & rhythm guitarist of the "Dashboard Saviors"...

The Dashboard Saviors are an Athens, GA-based roots-rock band consisting of
songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Todd McBride, Michael Gibson (guitar), Rob Veal
(bass) and John Crist (drums). R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, a longtime champion of the
band, produced the Dashboard Saviors' debut album, "Kitty" and was featured
in Rolling Stone in 1992. The group's songs often delve into sketches of
small-town Southern life, as titles such as "Coach's Wife" and "'A Trailer's
a Trailer" would suggest.

Leader Todd McBride grew up listening to country radio and such genre-defying
'80s West Coast roots-rockers as Green on Red and Dream Syndicate.
McBride's uncle was in a country and western band, and early on McBride decided
that kind of life was for him. Before the Dashboard Saviors, he was in a group
called the La Di Da's, which also consisted of fellow Athens notable Vic Chesnutt.
It was through that group that McBride first became acquainted with Peter Buck.
Buck not only produced and played on Kitty - he also helped the Dashboard Saviors
land a record deal with the Minneapolis-based label Medium Cool.
Buck had taken Medium Cool's founder, Peter Jesperson (onetime manager for the
Replacements), to see the group at a local Athens gig; Jesperson was impressed
enough to make the Dashboard Saviors one of his first signings.
Subsequently, McBride (who had been an office supply salesman) and the rest of
the group were able to quit their day jobs and hit the road in their van.
The group's sophomore effort, "Spinnin' on Down", arrived in 1993, while
"Love, Sorrow, Hatred, Madness" followed in 1995.

In German:

TODD McBRIDE - Sketchy

About the recording:

Autumn 1996 was the start of an interesting experiment. Two German record labels and their
booking agency teamed together and started the first "double-headliner tour" with Blue Rose
act The Dashboard Saviors and Glitterhouse band Go To Blazes - and those concerts had been
very successful. The idea was simple: both bands played 70 to 90 minutes, and they alternated
the order of their appearance each night. A similar concept was used a few months later for
"THE DESERT ROCKS"-tour 1997 with Rich Hopkins and the Luminarios and Granfaloon Bus in
January/February, and the same year during April with Chris Burroughs and Neal Casal.

The Dashboard Saviors separated early 1997, and Todd took the chance to record his solo-album
"Sketchy", again released by Blue Rose. Todd came back to Europe in December 1997 to promote
his album, this time as support act for Granfaloon Bus on their second big German tour 97/98...

All five musicians had lots of fun, they celebrated Christmas and New Years Eve together, and
soon there was a new band project, "Senior Deutschmark", 3/4th of Granfaloon Bus backing up
Todd after a few songs solo, and Todd came during the "headliner"-shows to help them with
some backing vocals, and sang lead vocals usually on one or two coversongs.

THIS HERE IS DEFINITELY A MUST-HAVE !

WHY ?

Including all those things an EXCELLENT boardtape should have:

- an artist in his prime, full of emotions (and a little booze - remember the two fellow Georgians)...
- the ONLY available boardrecording of Todd singing Townes Van Zandt's "You Are Not Needed Now" (track #08.)
- the ONLY available recording of Todd singing Vic Chesnutt's "Isadora Duncan" & the story behind (track #18.)
- one of the best band-versions of Todd's own ".45" EVER - bloodcurdling & spine-crawling !!
- a crowded room full of enthusiastic people...and this damn blue alcoholic liquor

SOUNDS GREAT ? YEAH, IT'S REALLY AWESOME...

AND THERE IS NO "BUT"....

EXCEPT MAYBE: "BUT"...WAY TOO SHORT...

This concert here was recorded close to tour-end
by my dear friend Woolfi - excellent as usual.

My dear buddy Ken TheCommish usually writes (and hey, he's damn right):
If you decide to download this show, won't you please consider posting a comment
on the show's board? It only takes a moment, and believe me, it takes A LOT longer
to prepare/upload a show for others to enjoy than it does to download and run...

You know, our friend Dave T says: "There's always more to come..."
And i'll promise you to keep MY tapes coming...
