An informal, casual backyard 4th of July gig in Wisconsin.
Telling the story behind this gig, here's what is on the TR Connection, "Warrens list":
KENOSHA WI. PRIVATE PARTY W/TODD AT CATHY LEE B'S HOME. DIRECT FROM THE 'DECK'!
Track List:INTRO. WEST VIRGINIA GIRLS. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. CLICHE'. HAMMER IN MY HEART. THE HOUSECARPENTER. SONG OF THE VIKING (AB'TED). MYSTIFIED. LOVE IN ACTION. TINY DEMONS. ONE WORLD. THE WHEEL
Note:Special note on this one by my Partner Jeff 'Weavil' Gauss: “Private Party at CLB's in Kenosha on 7/4/01, this will be the FIRST full-sharing of my SBD MASTER cassette...YEP, the show with me backing up Todd on "Mystified" and TR playing my axes running thru my pedals and '66 Fender Bassman amp while singing into my Sure 58 mic and P.A. This is taken directly from my Yamaha MT120 Multi-TRack cassette tape recorder, to Maxell UD-XL II using built-in dbx, atop my P.A. Head-which fed the stereo signal to the Deck. It was played back on this same Deck directly into Cakewalk, using gold ends, in 2008 at The Lizardz' Old Den. NO EQ-ing/normalizing/or ANY digital treatment or manipulation...sTRaight-up! Very intimate affair on July 4 of last year... talks loosely but aims to please-the keyboard is not satisfactory for the purposes then TR turns to the gtr...nice one off. Yes...I've somehow waited this long to bust out this beauty as digital flies. The CD saw the light of day by a close few. Greatest Day Ever!"~ Jeff
The story goes that CLB and Weavil (& others) actually intercepted Todd (while he was in Chicago) to come out to CLB's home in Kenosha. They gathered about a hundred people at $100 a pop and Jeff and some others provided the equipment and the sound. And off it went! This is indeed a 'greatest day' as Jeff put it.~ Warren
-Nice SBD! The only changes made were amplifying volume level after reducing applause spikes that threw the rest of the recording levels too low. It's better balanced now.
-Wind occasionally causes flutter on the microphone.
-Featuring rarely found traditional folk songs that Todd was doing then, around a Harry Smith folk anthology project.
-Track #7 shows how the keyboard failed, with somewhat amusing results.
-As you read above, Jeff 'Weavil' Gauss partially arranged this event, and supplied the equipment. I received this cd not long after that gig. He was thrilled to share with me, since my brother in Minneapolis was one of the few lucky enough to have attended!
Sadly Jeff is no longer with us, gone far too young. So here's to the memory of Weavil! a real music enthusiast and Todd fan.
