The Whiskey
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Monday, August 28, 2006

the band:
Todd Rundgren - vocals, guitars, more vocals
Jesse Gress - guitar, vocals
Tony Levin - bass, chapman stick, vocals
Jerry Marotta - drums

Interesting Room.
Rowdy, Classic Rock crowd.
(In line they all told stories of all the acts they'd seen over the years.)
The band that had played over the weekend was an AC/DC Tribute band.

The Whiskey boasts a capacity of about 800, and they told me over 500 showed up, which was a lot for that place. Not bad for a monday. It never felt full, but there were 3 bars, 2 extra iced beer stations, 2 side balconies and a raised seating area behind the dance floor. The crowd was teased with a Classic Rock DJ, but most of the people I talked to were ready for the recent TR stuff and danced around loving it throughout. They didn't work hard enough for the 2nd encore, and I let them. There was a LOT of drinking for a Monday night.

I managed to mount both sets of dpa4061 mics to the center support pole, with the caps pointing at each stack, and get 2 solid stereo tapes of the room from an identical placement. I ran one through the SBM-1 and the other straight into the M1 for comparison purposes. Couldn't ask for a better opportunity, but I wish I could have gotten the mics up higher to avoid the chat before and after...

For tapers and audio enthusiasts, this is an excellent chance to see how the Oade Bros Line Modification to the SBM-1 sounds.

Lots of good places to split for discs.
Details below...
