The first show of the hard rocking Arena tour. With different band members Rachel Haden and Matt Bolton. There are a few new tour issues, broken strings, with two aborted and restarted songs. The start of the show affected by some kind of light bulb falling (?), Courage gets interrupted by Todd getting a bug in the throat! This must have been an outdoor space and those Midwestern summers certainly get bugs. Still they make it all work! It's a fine show, with great bass presence in this recording. One of the best AUDs of the year. Sounds great loud — crank it up and enjoy!
From the TR Connection list :
"Note:Pretty good little piece provided to us by my ‘Pawdner’ Jeff (Weavil). Jeff says that there are two 'out there', but this one is best. Set started late due to a light falling on some gear that needed to be repaired/replaced. Some false starts/broken strings (3) and Courage is stopped due to Todd swallowing a bug. 11pm curfew = no encore. But usual example of how Todd can just move through the ARENA ‘hic-ups’ here. Still provided an awsome performance.~ Warren"
I recently found out that Jeff "Weavil" Gauss sadly passed away in 2020. We traded cd's in the early 00's. (I noticed his account with The Traders Den is still here) He was a true Todd fan, and music enthusiast, was a guitarist in his band The Weavils, and in 2001 organized a private backyard Todd performance. My brother and a friend drove to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Minneapolis for that gig, loving it's casual intimacy. Not long afterwards, Jeff sent me the recording, that I plan to post after I find it.
I don't know if he made this Arena recording, but as Warren noted — he supplied it, and he was from the area. So I want to dedicate this to the memory of Jeff Gauss, aka Weavil.
A recording from the Arena tour is something that the Todd camp should officially release. The Arena studio cd lacks the energy of a full live band — especially the solid drumming of Prairie Prince!
If you like this, then please buy Todd's officially released recordings! There are several posted on his Bandcamp page, here:
