TOM PETTY
PALLADIUM, NYC
NOVEMEBER 11, 1979

Well, hopefully this is the first of a series of concerts, that I will be uploading here. Anyone familiar with the Hitwithstuff 2 story here on Dime, will remember that I identified his mystery tapes for him and several others joined in telling the tale of the band of tapers that existed here in NYC, back in the 1970's. I won't go into it, but will say that Ken (Hitwithstuff2) inspired me to trot out my collection. I have uploaded several radio broadcasts from back in the day that I was able to transcribes from tape to disc. But, I am not really computer literate and it would take me forever to get anything done. So, I asked here on Dime if anyone had the time and the machinery to do it for me. Scott S (you know who you are) volunteered and this is the result that you are about to hear. This is the raw recording. Scott plans to work on this and see what he can do to improve it. However, I asked for the raw recording in case anyone else here, wishes to take a stab at it. Feel free to do whatever you can to improve this recording.

Okay, enough of that. I made this recording on a tiny hand held recorder, sitting in an aisle seat, in about the tenth row in the orchestra of the Palladium in NYC. If I remember correctly, I just put the recorder on the floor next to my seat. I am amazed at the sound!! This tape ( a TDK-SA C-90) has held up for 30 plus years. This is the Heartbreakers as they kick off the "Refugee" tour. Tom and the band are in top form as they rip through song after song with Mike Campbell just killing it on lead guitar. I've seen Petty a dozen or so times, and this was their most electric performance ever. This is the Heartbreakers at their peak. If you are a Petty fan, crank up your stereo and play Disc 2's first 2 cuts.
Listen To Her Heart and American Girl just smoke.........I've never heard them played better.

I think that the second disc is better that the first one, as far as overall sound, but the whole show is really pretty good considering the times and the recorder that I used. I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised. There is a glitch in the beginning of "The Wild One Forvever" where the tape got caught in the machine. It sounds like a record skipping for about 10 seconds. And, for whatever reason, the last encore is not as clear as the rest of the recording. Probabaly because people were on their feet. Check out this killer setlist.

To my knowledge, no recording of this show has ever surfaced anywhere. And honestly, I am guessing at a few song titles. I have a Bottlom Line show from 1977 and a Whiskey (LA) from 1980 show that have been transferred by Scott, up next. Neither of these has ever been uploaded anywhere, as far as I know. These are my recordings that I am sharing with you. Enjoy them, trade them, share them and improve them if you can. I have well over 1,000 cassettes that I am going through and, as Scott works his magic, I will share them all with you. Again, I have to offer a special thanks to Ken Hitwithstuff2. Because without you, these tapes would have just gathered dust in my basement.
