This Presentation:
Be advised that Tom Waits does not appear on the first four tracks. So why have they been included? The answer: They are relevant because Tom Waits appeared as a warm-up act for this show, and also warmed up on at least the following Zappa tours and dates:
November 22, 1973 > December 2, 1973
March 18, 1974
June 28, 1974 > July 21, 1974
August 11, 1974 > August 17, 1974
Many of these Zappa shows were recorded from the audience, but as of January 2025 this collector has not found a single recording of Tom Waits warming up from any of these shows.
In the case of Golden Hall, included here, it appears as though the mere threat of Waits returning to the stage caused the recordist to stop their machine. One can hear the crowd objecting to the idea that Tom might take the microphone, even at the invitation of Zappa himself. So this gives us a glimpse of what Waits faced as he did his 30 minutes of songs for the hostile Zappa crowd. We can also hear Zappa's band playing excerpts of Depot, Depot & 'Ol '55, which is interesting. Perhaps considering the audience response it is not surprising that Waits was at least hesitant to come out. Whether he did or did not come out is not known based on the available recording. It seems clear that this recording was part of the Zappa portion of the show. Otherwise the Mothers would not have been on stage.
For the Boston show, Waits does join the Mothers on stage. Interestingly, this is not a show at which Tom warmed up for the Mothers, which may explain his warmer welcome. Tom was in the middle of a run at Passim in Cambridge, MA. Apparently he was invited down to the Zappa show following his own gig, and was called on stage for a quick guest spot. It is perhaps surprising that rather than promote his "product" - meaning his song 'Ol "55 - to the crowd, Tom chooses to use his stage time to tell a couple of jokes. Version 1 of this recording has been patched by the Zappateers with an audience tape to fill a gap in the soundboard recording.

Frank Zappa - 1974-11-09 - Boston, MA (Late) (2nd SBD Source)
Appears to be the same source as above - possibly a generation better. The 2nd source came without a patch, so the 2nd source audience patch was done by the TWPP. The audience source used is the same source as the patch in source 1, redone using the full audience track.
