boombox's notes april 2022:
Another gig rearranged due to Covid, it was surprising to see only the bottom two tiers having been sold, especially after I had only managed to snag a fourth row seat in the first few minutes tickets had initially gone on sale two years ago. There were even seats left, unlike the previous two times I had seen Tommy. Jerry Douglas was a fine opening act, leaving after a short but sweet 30 minute set on dobro and lap steel, which went by far too quickly. Tommy was clearly happy to be back in Wales - his knowledge of the country was appreciated by quite a vocal crowd. He played a few less well-known tracks alongside the favourites, which was good, highlights for me being a beautiful harmonics-laden 'Secret Love', followed three songs later by a raucous Beatles medley. Jerry then rejoined him for a mini set at the end: the two of them clearly enjoy playing with each other and it left everybody asking themselves if there is any style Tommy can't play.
Happy to say that I finally got an error-free recording in 2022, which captured the dynamics of the set really well. I did add a bit of mid/high range boost as that particular venue does tend to kill those frequencies and a smidge of compression to bring the volume up a bit as the medley and percussion solo had some really high peaks. I did have to do a lot of work in post reducing really loud clapping from neighbours (got to get some new cardioids!!) - it was like Billy The Seal's brothers had escaped from the zoo and had stopped in en route to Victoria Park to see him. It involved a laborious three step process reducing each clap in small increments - it's not perfect, but way easier to listen to now than it was. I also excised one taper cough during applause late in the set.
Another great night in all, but please go out to see these guys and buy the CDs and merch so they can keep on doing it.
