if theres one thing that tony bennett has in spades - but many in this audience have never known - its class

two months shy of his 91st birthday, he is - as ever - the perfect blend of consummate showman and twinkly-eyed great uncle

at a live show, he is in his element

and it will take more than a higher than usual percentage of philistines to spoil it

but for those of us used to a hushed silence and awed reverence while he performs, things are not so peachy

maybe its the recent collaboration with lady gaga that have brought them, but there are many in tonight who have no idea how to behave outside of a football match or a hen night

the two boys in their early 20s behind me who bellow toneeeeeeeee! after every tune, do at least do so between the songs

the man old enough to know much better who yells love you, tony!! at the top of his lungs right in the middle of the way you look tonight - well - ill let you make your own minds about him

and as for the woman who screams something about the lights during the un-mic-ed Fly Me To The Moon

tony bennetts career had its hey day in a time before we were all told all day every day that me, me, me was the only song worth singing

when making sure everyone noticed you actually required you to have done something worth noticing - rather than just being an end in itself

hey ho

we live in the times in which we live

but we should count ourselves lucky to still have artists like tony bennett to remind us of a time that, if not better, at least had a little more class

i always assume that itll be the last time i see tony perform

and because of that, i always want it to be perfect - want it to feel like no one but he, his quartet and me are in the room

but he always surprises me

ill be in the room for his 95th birthday tour

maybe even his 100th birthday tour

and try as they might, no one can really spoil it for me

tune out everyone else

and enjoy
