"Bayern 3"-FM host during this festival was Fritz Egner - he started his career
early 1970ies working as audio engineer at AFN Munich. Since 1974 he was hosting
regularely AFN radioprogramms and -shows and improved his skills in the English
language. In 1979 he changed his job, joining "Bayern 3" as radio host, and was
later working both as radio AND TV-presenter - he's well known as specialist for
60/70ies, mainly Soul & Black Music.

So let's continue with DAY 2 - ACT 5:
============================

Torsten "Totta" Näslund was kind of Kent "OMAR" Dykes' brother from Sweden, both
in stature and voice, and the "Bluesband" is the same well oiled machine like
"The Howlers" - seems Sweden is not that far away from Mississippi...and Texas ;-)

Totta Näslund - Blues Singer.
Sweden´s most successful and popular blues singer, during the 1970s he was the singer of
legendary progressive rock group "Nationalteatern", and the 1977 album "Barn av vår tid"
(Child of our time) has the reputation of "changing the life for an entire generation".
He also teamed with several other artists, and with his own band, "Totta´s Bluesband",
he toured the United States with Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones.
Since 1995 he commenced a successful solo career.
One of his last concerts was to be a tribute to Bob Dylan in Hibbing, Minnesota.
- Peter Robsahm

Erik Torsten "Totta" Näslund (April 1, 1945–June 19, 2005) was a Swedish rock and blues musician,
with leftist political views. Näslund was born in Sandviken and grew up in the small northern town
Köpmanholmen, but moved to Gothenburg in 1970 to find work. He was working in the Gothenburg docks
when he joined Nynningen, a rock group with leftist political texts and inspired by the Russian
Communist poet Mayakovsky. Totta Näslund became the group's main singer.

In the mid-1970s, Nynningen fused with Nationalteatern, a musical theater ensemble with many members.
Totta Näslund joined the group as singer, guitar-player and actor. Nationalteatern developed away from
the theater and became a straight rock group, a rock orchestra as they called themselves. Even though
Totta never wrote any own songs for the band, he was probably the most prominent member, next to Ulf Dageby.

Nationalteatern was one of the many leftist music and theater groups that came together in 1977 to
form Tältprojektet, The Tent Project, a musical theater performance on the history of the Swedish
working class, which toured the country that summer. Totta Näslund played the Beggar, the central
story telling character of the play, and he sang some of the lead songs, like Aldrig mera krig
(Never War Again) and Vi äro tusenden (We are legion). Tältprojekted, a non-profit making experiment
financed by its members and supporters, was highly successful.

In the beginning of the 1980s, Nationalteatern dissolved and Totta Näslund directed his full energy
to his hobby project, Totta's Bluesband with lyrics in English and several smaller tours in the U.S..

In 1995, when Totta turned 50 years old, he decided to go for a solo career and has released 8 solo
albums with mostly songs written directly for him by other artists, or covers of other songs.

One of Totta Näslund's main sources for inspirations was Bob Dylan, and in May 2005 he went to Dylan's
hometown Hibbing, Minnesota despite his lethal cancer, where he performed his own interpretation of
Bob Dylan songs. Totta had also started making an album together with Mikael Wiehe, with Dylan songs
translated to Swedish, but this was interrupted when he suddenly died.

Totta Näslund died June 19, 2005 of liver cancer. He was scheduled to perform in his hometown
Köpmanholmen the next day. He was 60 years old.

About the place of event:

"Grosser Saal" (main stage - visitors capacity is either 370 seated or up to 1000 standing)
is the largest of 4 venues at the 'E-Werk' in Erlangen (it was the the former local electric utility),
three of them quite regularly used for concerts, and is (usually) provided with a (depending,
you know it, it's always the same...on the backline used, a lot of different other technical
issues & at last the skills of the sound board operator) excellent sounding PA-system.
The complete building got an entire 'basement to roof' reconstruction over the last decade,
culminating in the new name (AND logo, due to "zeitgeist"...hahaha): "Kulturzentrum E-Werk"
http://www.e-werk.de/

More technical informations, plus pics & scans included in the folder...

Our beloved 'Concertbüro Franken' (CBF - Harasim & Ballreich) was the local organizer &
promoter for all four venues during the whole festival - their first really big "event"
(including this European FM-broadcast...) after their start in September 1981 (and in-between
organizing & promoting a few dozen smaller concerts of mainly regional or German acts).

TOTTA'S BLUESBAND (the artists)

Grosser Saal, E-Werk (the room, the venue)
Erlangen (the city)
West Germany (the country)

May 12, 1984 (the date)

Erlangen is a Middle Franconian city in northern Bavaria, Germany. It is located at the confluence
of the river Regnitz and its large tributary, the Untere Schwabach - about 20 kilometers north of
Nuremberg, and has a population of more than 105.000 citizens (in 2008). Erlangen is today dominated
by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the numerous branch offices of Siemens AG, as well as
a large Institute of the Fraunhofer Society (-> mp3 !!). An event that still influences the city
was the settlement of Huguenots after the withdrawal of the 'Edict of Nantes' in 1685.

The Bergkirchweih is an annual beer festival, similar to the Oktoberfest in Munich but smaller in
scope, and therefore more intimate. It takes place during the twelve days before and after Pentecost,
under the spring trees of the "Berg" a small craggy, wooded hill, with old caves(cellars) owned by
local breweries. Around the door of the keller, the faithful of each brewery has its faithful drinkers,
liter sized clay "krugs" in hand, at the reserved tables of wood, seating perhaps 10 or 20 friends.
The Bier Fest draws more than one million visitors each year. There are carnival rides if high tech
quality, food stalls of every imaginable Franken dish, from bratwurst to roast-suckling pig, from
cinnamon "burnt almonds" to giant chewy pretzels. It is commonly known by local residents as the
"Berchkärwa" or simply the "Berch", as in "Gehma auf'm Berch?" ("Let's go to the mountain?"). This
outdoor event, packed with Franconians in various states of enjoyment, is practically unknown by tourists.

lineage:

recorded by lonetaper, FM broadcast to analog tape

recording May 12, 1984:

"Bayern 3"-FM Bavarian Radio broadcast (more SBD & less AUD matrix) > Airwaves > Sony STR 3800L Stereo Receiver/Amplifier >
> Hitachi D 980 Stereo Cassette Tape Deck (with NoiseReduction 'DOLBY C' ON) > My Compact Cassette Master
SONY BHF 90, ferric oxide (Fe2O3), Normal Bias Type I, EQ 120us, 135 meter tape, 1-7/8ips (4.76 cm/s)

the transfer:

My Cassette (master) > Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1 (manual playback head azimuth aligned ! NoiseReduction 'DOLBY C' ON) >
> Analog Cable (coax) > Behringer SRC-2496 Ultramatch Pro
(Ultra-high-resolution 24-Bit/96 kHz A/D & D/A and Sample Rate Converter & Dropouts-/Jitter Remover) >
> converted to 16 bit, SP 44,1 kHz > > Oehlbach Hyper Profi Opto Set (optical fibre, TOS-Link) >
> Terratec Aureon 7.1 PCI - Dolby Digital Live Soundcard with C-Media CMI8768 Soundprocessor Chip, digital S/P-DIF in >
> Motherboard with AMD Multicore Processor, Serial ATA Interface > CD Wave (recording) >
> Harddisc Western Digital with Thermaltake HD Cooler (EVER had a HardDisc burnout ??) >
> lonetaper's secret box of miracles # > CD Wave (tracking) > Traders Little Helper (SB aligned/level 6) > FLAC > DIME

# RAW FILES - so NO additional NoiseReduction or EQ'ing was used here,
and none of those compressors, Sonic Maximizers or other psychoacoustic
processors - just some of the broadcast-statics reduced , balanced the
stereo channels (just a touch) and finally normalized.

THERE IS SOME TAPE HISS & GENTLE AIRWAVE TRANSMISSION SOUND (wheeziness)
AUDIBLE (but it's not too distracting...PLEASE CHECK THE SAMPLES) !

AND PLEASE REMEMBER:

the audio quality on it is FAR from 'awesome sounding'
(nowhere to be found in this blurb here...) - in fact
it sounds "pretty average" for a master FM/SB - maybe
"pretty darned poor" for a supposed FM master tape...

this upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
if you want to know more about, check the old uploads...lotta stuff to read !

And if there's some interest, maybe there is MORE TO COME...
it just depends on YOUR demeanor, and lotta useful comments ;-)
