TOWNES VAN ZANDT
- November 12, 1996 -
Odeon, Muenster, Germany
** Audience MD-master, MWM 0180 **
>> ! FIRST TIME IN CIRCULATION ! - COMPLETELY UNTRADED RECORDING - almofada #004 -
Townes' last tour - 24 Bit/96 KHz RAW FILES FOR ALL THE DIE-HARDS << w/ samples

ONE:

VERY SPECIAL THANKS, from the bottom of my heart, to my friend,
fellow DIMEr "almofada" for opening his incredible live archive.

Working in the music industry business, back then, he was not only
able to get pretty close to the musicians, during self organized
meet'n'greet actions, instore concerts, promo interviews, etc.pp..
He also had the balls to record a big amount of truly incredible
sounding concerts from the front row, just for his own enjoyment.

HIS COLLECTION WAS, SO FAR, COMPLETELY UNTRADED AND UNCIRCULATED.

This is "almofada #004" - call it "004.1" as it's the first of it...

TWO:

This is the first of a multi-alternative upload.

As there are still NO RULES about joining RAW and EDITed files of the same show
in one upload - recently there have been some of them menaced to be banned, and
finally some of them had REALLY BEEN BANNED: "2 different versions of the same
performance should be shared in 2 separate torrents. Please redo this with each
version in its own torrent" - on the other side there is this new Led Zeppelin
upload, running without a problem (and a single mod's word...):

Torrent #306472 Led Zeppelin, " The Baron", Dusseldorf, Germany,
March, 12th, 1970, Raw + Remastered Audience Recordings

Was not able to find a specific rule about this habbit, and Jupiter SADLY never answered...

NOT RISKING TO GET BANNED WE DECEIDED TO UPLOAD SEPARATE TORRENTS.

THREE:

There seems to be a real "hype" about 24/96 recordings...was asked recently:

"...perhaps in the future you would consider retransferring some of your material in 24/96,
and making it available on DVD, rather than the inherently inferior CD format - there IS
considerable interest in this, as shown by the efforts of Dan Lampinski and his friends..."

Far away from being another Dan (but thanks for the kudos of naming us in one stroke with them),
we talked a lot with uncle Frizze (deafmusic), and although we all have the same mixed emotions
about the possible benefits (downside is a damn lotta more work...and we all have a "real life"!),
we'll try this now once with this extremely rare recording here...hoping for some wild enthusiasm !

THIS HERE IS THE FIRST IN A ROW OF "ALTERNATIVE RECORDINGS" OF THIS SHOW,
TRULY 24 Bit/96 Khz FLAC FILES FOR ALL THE ABSOLUTE DIE-HARD COLLECTORS...

THERE IS ALSO A 16/44.1 "RAW" UPLOAD COMING, AND I'M WAITING FOR SOME
SERIOUS REMASTERING (that means especially YOU, "edelwolf"...) UPLOADS
IN THE NEAR FUTURE, TO GET A "FLOOD OF ALTERNATIVE RECORDINGS" STARTED !

BUT BE WARNED:

LEO ALREADY DID AN AWESOME "EDITed" VERSION OF THIS SHOW...COMING VERY SOON !!

About Townes last tour:
===================

Some thoughts of eye- and earwhitnesses, giving a fair impression...

1996-11-29 Underground, Cologne, Germany:

...
Townes was already quite wasted in Solingen (they tried to cancel that show on the very same day)
but Cologne was a real freak show. There was a good crowd there but half of them only came to see
him fail. And they got what they paid for. For me, it was one of the saddest jobs I ever had to do.

For many years I did not give the tape away, and when I finally did, I asked people to keep it to
themselves; however you know how foolish such a thought is; some do and some don't. And it's OK.

There is one valid comment here: this recording shows what alcohol can do. If only for this, this
tape must be heard. Noone will ever listen to this for pleasure. And believe me, I obviously was
at the gig, if there was a video... it is like a nightmare, I still (after more than 13 years) can
not get it out of my head.
There are some aspects about this evening that the tape can't tell, that make it even worse. The way
the business was handled (not in Townes' favour), the impression that someone was cashing in on his
name without caring too much for his health (anyone familiar with TvZ will know who I talk about).
And, at the same time, talking to Townes and learning that he was one of the sweetest persons I ever
met! And the lady accompanying him, how sweet she was! When you watched the two of them you
realized that with all the bitter effects of his addiction, love was still the greatest and sweetest thing
for him (or for both of them). A night I will never forget.

"deafmusic" - April 18, 2010

deafmusc was, inter alia, soundengineer on those two shows:
Torrent #285274
Torrent #285314

Bochum 1996 November 30 - on the different uploaded source:

The voice is gone, the guitar playing is gone, and Townes can't remember the
lyrics of his own songs. I bring this torrent to you with mixed feelings.

On one side - don't play this recording if you want to gain fans for Townes Van
Zandt. Please, play his studio albums if you want to do that, or interpretations
by other artists. This is a recording for the true fan only - to conserve a
piece of TVZ history. Read about this great singer/songwriter - there is plenty
of information readily available on the web - and you, discerning listener, will
understand why I ask you this. Jeanene Van Zandt herself has expressed her
doubts about these recordings on numerous occasions, and let's respect that,
too.

On the other side - I personally love this recording because of the strength of
the songs themselves, undiminished even though their composer stumbles and
falls. I love it when Townes' humour appears to have lasted until the end. I
think it a good and rewarding thing that I have heard it - it completes the
picture of Townes Van Zandt as I have seen him on about 8 occasions. It is a
fine recording, too.

"marastha" - September 27, 2005

Bochum 1996 November 30 - on the reseed of the other source:

...this is for the diehards only !

"p25texas" - December 30, 2007

Both, "marastha" & "p25texas", have large collections and share
quite regularely a lot of all kinds of Townes Van Zandt recordings...

Thanks also to dear fellow DIMEr "scdegraaf" - this here is FOR YOU...

About this concert here:
====================

Here are the RAW files of a beautiful concert Townes gave during his last European
tour in 1996. Seemingly he had a lot of fun, and his voice (and his mind) was clear,
he remembered most of his lyrics, and was extremely talkative & very "joke-ative"...

The transition of "Tecumseh Valley -> Dead Flowers" is stunning, and the (in total)
over 10 minutes long "A Song For", morphing straight into "Waitin' Around to Die"
and finally "Marie" is simply P-R-I-C-E-L-E-S-S !!

IN MY OPINION ANOTHER "MUST-HAVE" SHOW (i know i write this ALL the time...)!

The (otherwise excellent) RAW recording on the
master sadly suffers from a lot of influences:

- loud & harsh microphone-noises at the beginning
- a too low level control during the whole recording
- the music is too quiet & the applause too loud (typical for acoustic AUD recorded shows)
- there is a clearly audible hum throughout ( from the PA ?)
- after normalizing to 100 % the hiss became more prominent (comparable to old "tape noise")
- it was COLD in November, so there is a lot of coughing, some of it close to the microphone
- some kicked bottles & breaking glass noises...bartender smiles, taper swears like a trooper...

And finally:
- by reason of the disc flip, there is some music lost at the end of "Pancho & Lefty"...

Please check the samples...
and if you're still beset by doubts:
WAIT FOR LEO'S "EDITed" upload...and you'll freak out COMPLETELY !!

FOR THE FIRST TIME OUT OF THE ARCHIVE,
COMPLETELY UNTRADED & UNALTERED - PLEASE ENJOY!

Odeon (the venue)
Muenster (the city)
Germany (the country)

November 12, 1996 (the date)

Muenster, or in German Münster is an independent city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
It is located in the northern part of the state and is considered to be the cultural centre
of the Westphalia region. It is also capital of the local government region Regierungsbezirk
Münster. The city is best known as the location of the Anabaptist rebellion during the
Protestant Reformation, as the site of the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia ending the
Thirty Years' War in 1648, and as the bicycle capital of Germany.
Münster gained the status of a Großstadt (major city) with more than 100,000 inhabitants in
1915. Currently there are around 270,000 people living in the city, with about 48,500 students,
only some of whom are recorded in the official population statistics as having their primary
residence in Münster. The city was founded in 793 by Frisian Ludger, who was consecrated as
the first bishop of the Münster diocese in 805. His successors held power over the largest
clerical territory within the Holy Roman Empire until 1803.

the recording:

the transfer:

MDs (master) > MiniDisc Deck Sony MDS-JE500 > Zoom H2 (24 Bit/ 96.000 Hz > 8 GB Toshiba SDHC-Card

# PURE RAW FILES 24/96 of this show by MWM 2010

The recording is absolutely unaltered, so NO additional NoiseReduction or
EQ'ing was used here, and none of those compressors, Sonic Maximizers or
other psychoacoustic processors - it's the PURE RAW VERSION - some hum and
a slight hiss is clearly audible...plus all the other described deficiencies.
