Trombone Shorty and Special Guests
Red Hot + New Orleans
Brooklyn Academy of Music
Brooklyn, NY December 4, 2010

This shows was produced by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in association with The Red Hot Organization in recognition of World AIDS Day (Dec 1). This was the third of the Red Hot series, and this recording is from the second of the two nights for the New Orleans show.

I found out about it on Friday and was able to snatch a nice ticket for the Saturday performance. This theater is one of several venues run by BAM, and is another of the beautiful old theaters that abound in the NYC area.

Trombone Shorty was credited as the "musical director". His band, Orleans Avenue, was the house band for many of the acts and provided the core of musicians for the others. The format was a series of mini-sets for the featured artists with plenty of guesting. I could not come close to telling you who played what on each song.

The energy was high throughout the night, although I confess to losing interest during the hip-hop sets of PNC and Mannie Fresh. Dr. John, was Dr. John. Although too low in the mix for my taste, he was great, as was Irma Thomas. Ledisi surprised me, she has great pipes. She covered her own tune "Knockin" (played with Eric Krasno) and Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World", sung with Kermit Ruffins. And of course, Ivan Neville brought a taste of the Meters to Brooklyn.

The night encompaased everything from jazz to funk to hip-hop, and Orlenans Avenue did not skip a beat. Shorty has assebmled a great groups of musicians, Who finished the show with a handful of his tunes, primarily from his new CD Backatown.

Taping the show was pretty difficult- how do you set sound levels when the band is marching down the aisle to the stage, as they did for the entrance tune? People were up and down in their seats all night long, and moving around as some folks left early. As is typical for these old theaters the sound was boomy and the recording fairly reflects the actual acoustics.
