One of my taper friends grabbed tickets for Lukas Nelson & The Promise of
the Real so we could go out and tape together. Show was at the Great American
Music Hall which is a great small venue in a seedy part of SF. Given parking
is a pain and car breakins a problem the trick to parking is to get there right
before 6 to park across from the venue. I timed it perfectly so the only thing
between my car and the entrance was the tour bus. Easy getting in and set up.
The first band was Lilly Mae which was straight out of a Nashville Honky Tonk.
They played a 30 minute set that was fun. The crowd was into it but as usual
too many talkers. Crowd was a mix of a typical SF crowd with a fair share of
people who looked like they were on FarmersOnly.Com. During the set break and
it got a bit more crowded. The next band Tyler Childers. They came on at 9
and I realized this was going to be a later night than expected. They are from
Kentucky and West Virginia and they sounded good. Some of the stories he told
were a bit odd as was the rat hunting intro but musically they were good. What
I though was a 45 minute set ended up lasting close to 90 minutes. I would have
been fine with 45 minutes given it was a Monday night. Lukas Nelson and POTR
finally came on at 11PM and they were worth the wait. They sounded great and
I felt the time playing with Neil Young had a positive impact. It was a mix of
originals and covers. In the middle of the set Lukas played a few solo acoustic
songs and the versrion of Tom Petty's Breakdown was the highlight for me. After
the acoustic portion the band came back out and kicked it up a notch. The last
song ended at 12:29 so there was no time for an encore but the crowd (that
remained) and the band felt it was a great performance. I got out of there and
was home quickly while getting a good listen in. My friend had to drive back
to Sacramento and said he got in at 2:30AM. All in all it was a good time.
