NOTES:
It's going to be a long evening for me, here in Utrecht at the Le Guess Who?
festival's May Day edition, but with names like Deerhunter and Poppy Ackroyd
on the bill, it's an event I can't pass up.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra are the first band on my list tonight, comprised of
Americans and Kiwis. It's not clear to me whether the band started in Oregon
or Auckland, but it doesn't much matter, either.
Their stock in trade is psychedelic rock of the highest order. The band's
fellow Australasians, Tame Impala, spring to mind as a reference point, but
this band are more gonzoid than that, out there in White Hills space rock land
much of the time.
UMO are lapped up by the enthusiastic audience in the wake of enthusiastic
reviews of their second album, the succinctly titled 'II'.
The only puzzle is why there aren't more live recordings of this band doing
the rounds. A quick DIME search yields a solitary radio session. Why?
The recording is excellent. Samples are provided to help you determine whether
this is one for you.
