boombox's notes may 2015:
A new venue for me, tucked away behind the station on an industrial estate, The Marble Factory is little more than a big shed, but even so, is still probably one of the smallest venues of the tour - "compact
and bijou," Bernie called it. Opening up were Blurred Vision, who are based around Iranian-born Canadians, the Osley brothers. We got a short 30 minute set showcasing their debut album and their funky Floyd
cover, aka "Hey, Ayatollah, Leave Those Kids Alone". Their music reflects their Persian origins and at times they reminded me of XTC doing The Doors. As for Heep, I've been a huge fan since 1988, when, as the
"Special Guests", they blew everyone off stage at Reading, when it was still a proper rock festival. Three of that line-up are still there, with recent enforced changes to the rhythm section bringing in Russell
and Dave, who had some pretty big boots to fill. Bernie remains one of my favourite vocalists of all time, the rest of the band are incredible musicians and they still know how to put on a show, but crucially,
enjoy themselves too. Their set mixed up tracks from new album 'Outsider', with classics from those early 70s Heep albums which established them as the ultimate heavy prog band. Tough to pick out highlights,
but I haven't stopped singing 'One Minute', and a complete 'Magician's Birthday' with a mental guitar drum-duet and 'July Morning' probably stood out most for me.
I'm quite pleased with the recording on the whole. I added a very slight mid-range hump to brighten it up a bit, did a little bit of work on some loud claps here and there and brought the volume up. The only
niggle I have with it was beyond my control - two ignorant *&*&^s who started to talk loudly near me off and on for about 20 minutes in the middle. They are not too obtrusive, but listening loud with
headphones, you will sometimes pick them up. As always, my 24bit master files are available for anyone wanting to have a go at them.
Enjoy the show - I did!!
