A few weeks ago, a request went out in a comment on a Utopia share for some Oblivion and POV Utopia material. So far, so good on heeding that request as a few shows from each tour have been made available, and here's another installment in getting some of the shows from that general timeframe (1984-85) running and out there again.
This particular show was from quite early on in the POV tour (most, if not all, dates on a bill with The Tubes touring their Todd produced Love Bomb album). The POV album had come out in January, 1985, and it was the final studio release from the band. This Iowa date seems to be the first Utopia capture from that tour, and there are 2 different versions that show up on the Todd boot page connected to the TR Connection. I'm not sure if this version touches on one of them, or not.
I'd grabbed this here from someone called BootRay in a share during 2019. I couldn't find either the show or the seeder in a recent search here, but from their notes, they'd apparently recorded and shared shows from Iowa going back to the mid 70's. When this was shared, they seemed to be digitizing their recordings, and preparing 24-96 versions of some of them for posterity. From the file size and notes with this show it doesn't seem that this was shared in 24-96, but came over in 16-44.
In any case, BootRay's notes had been somewhat dismissive regarding the quality of the capture, but he was high on the band and performance that they turned in. In re-visiting the show, it seemed better than he had described it. That led to speculation that some further improvements could be made to the initial capture to turn this into what might actually stand as a good document of the band from this tour. I opened the files in Audacity, and have now re-tracked the show to catch the starts of songs more accurately. Misnamed tracks (Mated had been shared as Love is the Answer), and the unknown files from that first share Mystified and More Light) now appear correctly named. With the files open, a Mastering tool in Audacity was tested and then applied to lead to the quality of the files that you'll now be able to gauge in the samples below. The first song, Play this Game will still have some uneven levels for the first minute or so, but then things will be even and constant for the rest of the show. The Play this Game issues probably related either to the sound person in the arena making adjustments, or some early complication while recording.
Speculation on the TR Connection page had been that a few songs were likely to have been played and not recorded on the versions shown there. One of them ended with Caravan, and another with More Light, as does this version. If that speculation was correct, the band may also have played Love is the Answer and/or Just One Victory. It also does remain possible that More Light was the final song played, as this was early in the tour, and The Tubes were still to play. This whole tour for Utopia was remembered for being somewhat hampered by sound issues associated with the then cutting edge stage setup and equipment that Utopia employed for the live POV shows. There was speculation on the TR Connection that might be what led to lengthier pauses than normal between some of the songs.
No matter, as a big Todd/Utopia fan, I think this is a fine document of the band at this point, and I feel that this show is being shared here in fine form. Many thanks to BootRay for this recording and share. Some of his notes from that are copied and pasted below:
