Found a fine quote about a concert the same band
did two days earlier, written by "Communique":

"Music to commit suicide to, made by a singer, who can't sing. Saw him
live at the famous club Knust in Hamburg back on March 11, 1996, when
I was very, very down and out. Fitted to my bad condition back then."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

About the artists:

Despite their background (punk), geography (Seattle), and label affiliation (Sub Pop),
the Walkabouts were anything but a grunge band; dark, haunting, and elegiac, their work
instead sprung forth from the storytelling traditions of American roots music and the
kinetic excitement of rock & roll. The Walkabouts were formed in 1984 by Chris Eckman
and his brothers Curt and Grant, all of whom had previously played together in a number
of punk-pop outfits, along with singer Carla Torgerson, a veteran of folk and street
singing. The group's lineup proved fluid, although Chris Eckman and Torgerson remained
the Walkabouts' driving forces; a later roster including bassist Michael Wells, multi-
instrumentalist Glenn Slater, and drummer Terri Moeller did hang together for a number
of years.

After issuing a self-titled cassette in 1984, the Walkabouts released the EP 22 Disasters
a year later. A full-length LP, Weights and Rivers, was planned for 1987, but the record
was never released - a harbinger of music industry problems to come. Instead, the group
offered See Beautiful Rattlesnake Garden in 1988, which not only marked the continued
maturity of Eckman and Torgerson's songwriting but also earned the Walkabouts a contract
with the fledgling Sub Pop label. The deal resulted in upgraded production values, as
evidenced by 1989's Cataract and its follow-up, the next year's six-song EP Rag & Bone,
which featured the keyboard work of the newly added Slater.

Released in 1991, Scavenger proved to be the last Walkabouts record issued in their native
land for some time; however, while the deal with Sub Pop's American division went sour, the
label's European division, Glitterhouse, hung on to the Walkabouts, where the band's following
had been steadily growing. Between 1993 and 1995, the group issued a staggering seven full-
length records in Europe -- three by the full band, a limited-edition live collection, and
three more released by the duo of Chris & Carla. Finally, in 1995 the three aforementioned
Walkabouts albums - the double-LP set New West Motel, the all-covers Satisfied Mind, and the
more rock-oriented Setting the Woods on Fire - all appeared domestically. A year later, the
band issued two more albums, the all-new Devil's Road (recorded with the Warsaw Philharmonic
Orchestra) and Death Valley Days: Lost Songs and Rarities, 1985-1995, a collection of odds
and ends.
In November 1996, Wells left the Walkabouts to devote himself to his side project, Pluto Boy;
he was replaced by bassist Baker Saunders.

About the venue & this concert:

After more than a decade of organizing and promoting concerts in the Nuremberg area
(and abroad...) in venues, city-halls and rooms on lease, our beloved Concertbüro
Franken finally found in the early 199o's an appropriate property in a former industrial
area in Nuremberg's southern township. Previously a factory building, claybrick of solid
construction, big enough for a concerthall with a capacity of 800-1000 people standing,
a restaurant, a large beergarden outside - and enough parking lots.
PLUS: far away from any neighborhood sensitive to noise...especially AT NIGHT...hahaha...

After close to two years of renovation the new venue "Musikclub Hirsch" (musicclub deer),
or in short: "Der Hirsch" (the deer), opened in late summer of 1995, mainly with disco,
parties and various events. The "real" first concert season started in January 1996...

Speaking of this Nuremberg show here, it was crowded
like hell, NOT BAD for week #10 of a newly opened
"concert venue" with REAL ROCK GIGS (lol !) !

http://www.der-hirsch.de

This show here is concert #21 from The Walkabouts' European Winter/Spring Tour 1996, which
started @ Borderline, London on February 19, and ended on April 6th @ Rodon in Athens, Greece...

Gary Heffern & band was the opening act, and this Nuremberg
show was Gary's LAST CONCERT supporting them on this tour.
So the whole night was more like a party, especially backstage...

I came early, knowing about the easy parking situation in comparison to other clubs,
but was not prepared to wait almost half an hour outside the venue just to get in.
Security was tight, and finally the visitors stood inside packed like sardines...

There are some slight volume fluctuations at the beginning of the recording by reason
of the crowd jostle and my pushing and shoving in the front row - started the recording
standing near the right PA speaker stacks (same position i'd recorded Gary...), and
as this turns out to be Carla's "SIDE" of the stage, ended near the left PA speakers,
sideways to Mr. Eckman - interesting crowd movement ! Wearing a Neil Young & Pearl Jam
shirt from the 1995 Eurotour finally led to the acquaintance of P.W. ("hthhth" on DIME),
Walkabouts' (& many more...hahaha...) biggest European (minimum...) collector & friend.
You'll hear his famous first words "Warste bei Neil Young...und wo ?" at the very end
of this recording - SO THIS UPLOAD HERE IS ESPECIALLY FOR YOU...DEAR OLD OPA HÄNDEL !
We ended backstage with the two bands, and i remember talking a lot with Chris & Carla.

Talking about the speakers and amplifiers: they had just a few rock concerts before,
and about six months with all kind of parties, mostly tekkno, techno & all this sorts
of dance odds and ends...so the system and the mix was really boomy, nearly all
recordings from 1996 and early '97 suffer from reverberation and a quite muddy sound.
Later in 1997 they boosted everything, their speaker stacks, PA system and amplifiers,
and they diminished the severe reverberation, leastwise partially, with long black
curtains and mounted sound attenuators on walls and ceiling...

This concert here was not only sold out, it was packed, hot and steamy inside, like
in a sauna in full heat (at the end of a hard winter with mud, ice and cold outside),
AND there was this enthusiastic and absolutely crazy crowd, like usual in the Nuremberg
area those days...a damn loud, rowdy & later (in parts) severly drunken audience...

Despite all those problem, and compared to the sound in this venue that night, the
recording turned out quite hear-able (especially considering all the problems & weird
circumstances) but not trade-able (taper's opinion), and rested in our vaults until today...

BUT TECHNOLOGY PROGRESSES - especially speaking about studios & computers.

A damn lot of all the studio equipment was used, and an incredible amount of valuabe lifetime,
to get quite a satisfying result out of them "bassy" RAW files. In the lineage section is a
more specific overview of what was used and what was done...but why bore the hell out of you
with lots of weary technical descriptions...it's finally the result - THE SOUND - that matters !

Always remember real-O-mind (G2): It is what it is - "It ain't perfect, but it ain't bad"

Please check the samples...

and if you're still beset by doubts:

LEAVE IT, GRAB SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT !!

IN MY OPINION ANOTHER "MUST-HAVE" SHOW (i know i write this ALL the time...)!

FOR THE FIRST TIME OUT OF OUR ARCHIVE,
COMPLETELY UNTRADED, CAREFULLY EDITED,
AND OTHERWISE UNALTERED - PLEASE ENJOY!

And don't forget:

CRANK UP YOUR STEREO & START SINGING !

the WALKABOUTS (the artists)

Nuremberg (the city)
Germany (the country)

March 13, 1996 (the date)

Nuremberg (German: Nürnberg) is a city in the German state of Bavaria, in the administrative
region of Middle Franconia; it is Bavaria's second largest city after Munich. It is situated
on the Pegnitz river and the Main-Danube Canal, and is located about 105 miles north of Munich,
the population is over 500.000 (as of 31. January 2008). The town is also the Center of the
Metropolitan Region Nuremberg.
When one thinks of Nuremberg, they usually have things like Bratwurst, Gingerbread, Toys,
Christkindlesmarkt, Reich Party Rally Grounds or the Nuremberg Trials in their mind. But the
old town of Nuremberg in the shadow of the towering imperial castle is more than that. Gothic
churches, splendid patricians' houses and romantic corners and spots. An atmosphere of lively
co-existence between medieval and modern, between the past and the present prevails in Nuremberg.

# fully EDITed version by Leo, MWM 2010

universal applications:

carefully de-noised, de-hummed and de-hissed, any EQ'ing was very
slight, using the BBE Sonic Maximizer and several Plug-Ins, lowering
them DAMN HEAVY BASS MUD, and especially to pull all the vocal &
instrumental frequencies forward - just a touch - to help balance
it overall a bit better...for Leo's ears...and as he's really
old enough...no...hmmm...really intellectual, well sophisticated
and with a damn lot of knowledge, i still trust him completely...

specific applications:

- volume reduction or complete deletion of the loud & harsh microphone-noises at the beginning
- increased the volume of the music, averagely +4,0 dB, de-hiss them to the same extent
- increased the spoken passages inbetween the songs, averagely +5,0 dB, de-hiss them to the same extent
- increased all the spoken passages - word for word, sometimes letter for letter
- reduced the loud applause passages, averagely -3,0 dB
- reduced the loud coughing & sneezing parts individually
- reduced the sections with kicked bottles & breaking glass noises...
- reduced some of the instrumental plug ins and other weird noises...
- smoothed out some passages and balanced the stereo channels (just a touch)

listen to the result and try it again...and again...and again...this can be BORING ;-)

and finally:

the only further addition was a short fade-in and, at the end, a fade-out - after the
audience applause, so truly NO MUSIC was harmed or lost, all the other crazy musician's
& audience behaviour was left exactly the way it was that night. Normalization at the end...

STILL DOUBTING ?

in a special folder you'll find the first four songs as RAW files,
just normalized and FLACed. Judge with your own ears if the EDITed
version here is a major improvement or NOT...(in case of "NOT", my
dear dad Leo comes around to adjust your very own ears...hahaha...)

and if you like the result - BY FAR NOT PERFECT -
please write a fine PM and you'll get all our
necessary banking informations...not joking !

this upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
if you want to know more about, check the old uploads...lotta stuff to read !

SPECIAL THANKS TO Walkabouts' Chris Eckman & Carla Torgerson, plus
all their past & present bandmembers...R.I.P. John Baker Saunders.

Thanks to Peter, Axel & HG, good old HIRSCH and all involved.
Not to forget a certain Peter Weber...and his family.

And if there's some interest, maybe there is MORE TO COME...
it just depends on YOUR demeanor, and lotta useful comments ;-)

Melody Maker, April 6, 1996:
Another cult bites the dust. Having spent six years producing God knows now many albums
for Sub Pop (making them that label's most popular act in Europe), delving into the very
guts of country rock, The Walkabouts now seem set for the big crossover.
Recorded at the Conny Plank studio near Cologne, previously the temporary abode of Kraftwerk,
Devo and Can, and produced by Victor Van Vugt, the man responsible for co-vocalists Chris
Eckman and Carla Torgerson's fabulously melancholic "Life Full Of Holes", "Devil's Road"
sees the band attain an apotheosis of sorts, finally fully evoking the desolate space and
grandeur of Nowheresville, USA.

Veering between the slow, slow descent of the heartcrushing lament, "Christmas Valley", the
sweet claustrophobia of "The Light Will Stay On", the Hammond blast of "Fairground Blues"
and the late-night bar-room soul of "When Fortune Smiles", often bursting into their trademark
squalls of scuzz-rock distortion, this album is instantly familiar without ever seeming hoary.
With its sparkling, plummeting piano and ghostly acoustic strum thrust skyward by the restrained
power of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra (this is one lush sound), with tracks on the very
verge of slipping into "Losing My Religion" or Cave's mighty "Red Right Hand", and Eckman's
dusty, world-weary rasp conjuring images of the first half hour of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre",
it takes from impeccable, hazily-remembered sources and, like Oasis' "What's the Story",
becomes immediately seminal in itself.

With violin courtesy of Diction from Tindersticks (who, along with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, were
heavily involved in "Life Full of Holes"), "Devil's Road" is a startling success, the best of
a band already consistently superb.

Utterly, undeniably brilliant.

- The Stud Brothers

Melody Maker, March 30th, 1996:
"Devil's Road," the brooding, string-laden sound of Gene Clark, Tindersticks and Emmylou Harris
getting whiskey-drunk, sees The Walkabouts finally making the record they've always threatened
to make--and doing so with the fervent brio of a new band. "Devil's Road" is a widescreen wonder
in a television world.

Time Out (London), Feb.14-21 1996:
A marvelously assured collection of tender, driving melody and darkly plangent emotion, which
should finally earn their sublime, lonesome and blue, epic rootsy sounds a widespread popularity
to go with their long-time critical acclaim. Watch out! The Walkabouts are coming.

Q Magazine, May 1996:
....In the great tradition of classic American storytelling, The Walkabouts' path is surrounded
by tall shadows, hazy recollections and soap opera hooks that languish in the memory.

Vox, May 1996:
That "Devil's Road" was recorded...with Nick Cave's producer gives a pretty good indication of
where the band are at...a haunting tale of devils, angels and salvation...the same cynical,
heartbroken rock'n'roll, only bigger and better than ever before. It's nice to know there are
some things you can rely on.
