Notes:
I haven't seen Wang Chung since their Points On The Curve tour in 1984. They've always been one of my most favorite bands from that era and I have
never stopped listening to their music--especially their first three albums (Huang Chung, POTC, and To Live & Die In L.A.). So I was extremely happy
when this gig got announced since I have never been able to make their shows since they started playing the States again in 2009. The downsides to
this show were the turnout (less than 100 people) and the lack of merch. Upsides were that they didn't seem to treat us like a stopgap on the way to
the next show (like so many touring acts do), plus it was great to hear the Tazer Up! material live and to be graced with a song from their debut.
I didn't have anyone around me for almost the entire evening, which I feel has greatly benefitted this recording. However, that feeling dissipates
from "Dance Hall Days" through the end of the show. I moved closer to the stage during "DHD" because I suddenly had tons of people around me and I
wanted to stay away from their flailing, intoxicated bodies. But I still picked up their noise (clapping, wooping, screaming and singing). I then
moved further back at the encore because two drunken woopers got in front of me and the man shouted so loud that I desperately wanted to get away from
him. But since more than 2/3 of the crowd split at the encore, the woopers took advantage of the floor space and grinded on each other all over the
place. You will hear them talking, clapping and also stomping on the wooden floor as they acted like they were at an R-rated barn dance. And speaking
of incongruous dancing, there was a couple that slow danced through most of the show (something that Nick comments on after "City Of Light"), but that
couple was polite and never invaded anyone's space--unlike the clodhoppers who treated the rare, deep cut as if some local bar band was playing. I've
certainly had a lot worse at this venue, so by comparison to those nightmare evenings, this is nothing. It's just a little jarring because of how
mellow it was up until "DHD."
I amplified this, but you'll probably still have to turn it up. I did nothing else to the recording. I feel this is lacking some bottom end but I
didn't want to mess with it, so please adjust your eq to your own liking. And if burning to cd, this can fit on one disc with a slight overburn.
Alternatively, the suggested split is between "Wait" and "Rent Free."
Please support the band by buying their official releases and merch--especially their latest studio album, Tazer Up! (which will hopefully be pressed
into a physical form someday).
