Gig Notes:

The band were touring in support of their new album, Frying On This Rock. Cosmic Dead were the local support (who managed to overrun their stage time and got a torch flashed in their faces as an incentive to call it a night. Haven't seen that happen for a long time!

The venue for this show was changed from the Arches to the Stairway Club, which is right next to Central Station. Used to be a venue in the past, but first time there for me. Bit of a basement and the seating area is around an "L", so out of sight of the stage, but a roomy-enough stage and a fair bit of space for a crowd. Not sure of capacity, though Glasgow is definitely not short of the 200-350 sized venues.

White Hills came on as soon as the stage gear was sorted out, but within a couple of songs, Dave managed to bust a string. He mentioned that last time he was in Glasgow, he managed to slice a finger open as well. A couple of minutes later, they were trying to claw back the lost time. White Hills music and the bands stage presence seems to divide folks. I take it as the good fun and great music it is, with nothing being too serious, so it works for me. Dave W is always running around, pulling faces and throwing shapes, with the ever lovely Ego Sensation (attired in a fetching red velour hot-pant suit!) pounding out the bass lines, with Nick Name, pounding the back beat out on his kit. I was quite taken with his playing on some of the songs.

Good to see a band who change the set list around throughout the tour. Nothing stale in listening to a couple of shows from the same tour. They play some gems that other bands would leave unplayed by only playing the "hits".

Overall, a really good set and a good night, despite the relatively low turnout (120-150?). Lots of psychedelic riffing and plenty of wah-laden soloing from Dave. I went over to the merch table at the end and bought the new album and the tour-only cd. Ego Sensation had pitched up to relieve the roadie and was genuinely cool to talk to and really quite beautiful close-up. I hope they come back to Glasgow again next time around.

Recording notes and sound quality:

Recorded from somewhere in the middle, but perhaps a little too far forward from the best spot for the PA, in order to avoid the chatterboxes. Sounds pretty decent to me, though perhaps the vocals are a little quieter than they could have been. You be the judge.
