Comments:
Another good performance and great-sounding show from The Who's winter 1979 U.S. tour, this one from Cleveland. Setlist is very similar to the previous nights posted, but the band seems back on their game after a very emotional show in Buffalo. Nothing particular stands out from this show, other than a very tight performance.
Sound quality is similar, perhaps a bit better, than the Cincinnati and Buffalo shows recently posted. I'm no expert on the various sources available from this tour, but I would hazard a guess that this is a significant upgrade over anything in common circulation. The fidelity is excellent, the mix is great, and there is minimal audience interference. Another JEMS recording that you would swear was recorded in the current era using top-end equipment, rather than analog gear 35 years ago.
Comments from "J":
A workman-like performance turned in by The Who for the 5th night of the winter '79 tour for Cleveland. No setlist surprises but a very solid performance overall. You can hear Marc Cohen commenting to me at the end of the encore that Roger was pissed off at Pete. This would be a recurring problem for the next couple of years of touring (it probably had been a problem for the band's entire career). Roger is not of fan of Pete's improvasations in their shows. He's just not very good at it himself, so when Pete leads the band off to unknown territory (the most interesting parts of the show for me) Roger can't really follow him. You can hear Roger throwing his mic down at the end of 'The Real Me'. He gets over it though...
Many thanks to the JEMS team for making these fine recordings available to the masses. Mp3 samples are included in the comments.
