I'd last seen the Who at the Oval in 1971 so i was buggered if i was going to sit still during the whole show in order to record, so the intrepid Fryeman stepped up the plate and offered to do the deed.He stood stock still the whole night and didn't even clap.
The sound was really good where we were situated, not in the front rows but only about 10 rows back from the front. More or less centre, once the band came on everyone stood so the seats were a royal waste of time.
A great show, time may have stopped them from leaping around quite so much and Rogers voice is occasionally a bit croaky, but Mr Starkey is a great drummer ( are you listening Kenny Jones ) and Palladino does a good impersonation of the OX's lines and i got off on this show as much as if the old lineup from 1971 was still playing. .
We were well pleased, this proved to be a very exciting and energetic gig . Pete shredded his fingers During Won't Get Fooled Again, so we were treated to Rogers rendition of the Johnny Cash classic Ring Of Fire whilst the flailing one was receiving some first aid backstage. Still did a number of encores and it was all capped off with a lovely tea and Theatre.
A Magic night and the sound has come out nicely, the crowd were well behaved and not a lot of noise near us apart from some girl shouting at pete about 6 rows back to get on with it.
This is NOT the version on the traders database which is graded B+ ,I've not heard the other version, but the consensus of our group is that we would grade this recording higher than that, an A?. Well, its all subjective anyway, but it sound pretty good……
