His nickname 'Wild Bill' reflected a reputation for heavy drinking and womanising (Anne Stewart was his fourth wife). His cornet style was generally hot and powerful, but could also be delicately melodic.
Here's a fantastic show. Close to the 9:20 mark not only does the sound increase by 7db during this song, but the sound quality improves significantly. Who knows why? The taper made adjustments of some kind, and the overall sound quality is MUCH better (not just louder)at that point. Gawd only knows why, especially for a recording that is this old.
Techinal stuff:
20+ years ago I made copies from the person who recorded these shows. My copies were on Sony UCXS 90 tape. Type II High Bias tape.
Sony UCXS 90 tape -> Nakamichi BX-125 2 head tape deck (no dolby) -> XONAR D1 PCI 7.1 audio card -> Audacity -> Adobe Audition 3.0 - Wav file -> Flac Frontend - Level 5
Good news. I have a new used Nakamichi deck. The last one died and now has a new home at the Goodwill and will be able to keep posting from the 600 + cassette tapes.
