This is one hell of a line-up:

* Will Calhoun (Living Colour, Mos Def, Wayne Shorter) – drums, percussion, electronics

* Victor Bailey (Weather Report, Mary J. Blige, Lenny White) – electric bass

* Bennie Maupin (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Meat Beat Manifesto) tenor/soprano sax, bass clarinet

* David Gilmore (Lost Tribe, Cindy Blackman, Monday Michiru) guitar

There was some very vicious soul jazz, post-bop, brainy modal segues, and bits of out playing, some ECM-like pastoral moments, and some great drum workouts on trap kit, Udu drum and a battery of effects through a KORG Wavedrum.

The standout for me was Maupin, who at 70 still has ferocious technique (he did at least one extended figure using circular breathing that just folded my brain in on itself) but he was chameleonic as he switched instruments and gears like only a seasoned pro can. It takes one hell of a player to make a bass clarinet seem so pimpish, and he wields it with authority.

And if you’ve never seen someone play a Wavedrum, Calhoun is the undisputed king of it.
