Here's a great show from Wooden Shjips this past Saturday night in Raleigh, NC - the final show of their week-long "east coast" tour with Birds Of Avalon. I had been planning for a couple of months to go to this show and then to go see The Oh Sees a couple of nights later in Winston-Salem, NC. Then a couple of weeks ago, I finally realized the two shows were on the same night, so that plan was out the window. Ultimately, I chose the 5 minute drive down to Kings, rather than the 90 minute drive to Winston-Salem. I'm sure The Oh Sees/Total Control show was great (maybe someone taped that?), but so was this one.
I recorded this from right side of the room, standing on the bench, trying to get above the crowd, about 10 feet from the right speakers. Being a Saturday night and a homecoming show for Birds Of Avalon, the club was full, and I suspect some people were unfamiliar with Wooden Shjips, which lead to lots of talking and socializing rather than listening to the band. Why people insist on yelling over loud music rather than moving to a quieter part of the club if you don't dig the band onstage is beyond me, but I'm not most people. Luckily, the band was loud and I think my spot worked out well - I didn't hear anything too disrupting when listening to it while tracking it out, so I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. If you haven't seen Wooden Shjips, they had a projector in the back of the room shining across the whole stage with psychedelic images and colors and whatnot, so turn this one up, close your eyes and then press on your eyeballs until you see stars and you'll pretty much feel like you were there. Hope you dig it - and buy the new album on Thrill Jockey if you don't already have it.
