During the autumn of 1987 I had the incredible fortune to see three sets of the WSQ's 3-day stint at Carlos 1 in NY with my best friend. They were some of the best concerts I can ever remember seeing. These recordings catch the WSQ at their peak; they had just received huge press with the amazing Duke Ellington covers record, and were soon to release 'Dances and Ballads.' They are also special recordings in that they capture founding member and alto genius Hemphill just over a year before he left the ensemble. His death in 1995 left the jazz world poorer.

OK, here's a warning to purists out there: back in '87, I wasn't interested in archiving live recordings in pristine untouched shape...I was going for listenability, since I was taping the shows for my own pleasure and not to trade. So these are edited shows--there are fades between some tracks to edit out loud applause. That said, the sound quality is excellent, and very enjoyable.

I have included, on the third disc, the WSQ's appearance as hosts of New Visions on VH-1, immediately following the Carlos 1 appearances. Besides some killer performances, this is significant for the members of the band speaking about the history of the group, and various subjects including current solo involvements.

If you enjoy what you hear, please leave some feedback, and remember to leave it on your drive for as long as you can to allow others to share the great tunes.

As always, artwork included!
