JEMS' latest series presents new transfers of master recordings made by SoCal-based taper Rick L who was active in the early '80s. While he was a fan of bands like Yes and taped them on more than one occasion, his tastes were eclectic and of-the-moment, ranging from new wave artists featured on KROQ-FM to reggae and jazz acts. So while he didn't have Millard-caliber equipment, he did cover many shows not recorded by Millard or others who leaned more towards the classic rock end of the spectrum. We'll be presenting the best of his work and his collection over the course of this year.

Vol. Two marks the first of Rick's many recordings of Yes. We begin with the band's triumphant resurrection after a four-year hiatus, on tour in support of the chart-topping 90125 album (produced by Drama-era member Trevor Horn) and its mega radio and MTV hit "Owner Of A Lonely Heart."

As the story goes, the last version of Yes broke up after 1980's Drama album and tour. Three years later, Chris Squire and Alan White started a new band called Cinema with guitarist Trevor Rabin. Jon Anderson and Tony Kaye also came on board, with Kaye then briefly departing, replaced by Eddie Jobson, only for Kaye o return to play keyboards on the 90125 tour. The Anderson, Kaye, Rabin, Squire and White line-up would last for two album cycles.

This Forum show, the second of two nights, is representative of the 90125 tour and its core setlist, which featured a lot of the album plus Yes classics. Rick was seated close on the floor and had to keep his microphone relatively hidden which results in a close-sounding but somewhat narrow-fidelity recording, but one that is a clear upgrade to the other circulating tape of the show available on Forgotten Yesterdays. Samples provided. The only curious thing about Rick's recording is that he missed four songs of the set at what should have been the first tape flip, but we have confirmed that his cassette masters only contain three sides of music so everything he taped is here.

We want to thank Rick for lending us his tapes and allowing us to share his work. Please let him know your appreciation via comments. Also lending a hand on the series are JEMS' frequent collaborators Professor Goody, who helped tune up the pitch, and mjk5510 who took care of post production.
