We were certainly cocky and chirpy...There was a feeling of confidence in the room that we were doing something ambitious and fresh. Id been playing well, doing things in various bands, but I needed something that would move the air. When I got in with Yes, I said, This feels good. Were all equals, and everybodys outstanding. It was like joining an orchestra, where all of the members are of a very high level. I thought, Were going to do something pretty great.

We werent going to be obvious and predictable. We didn't want to do three-minute songs for the radio, although we did manage to get a lot of radio play. Bill loved to play challenging music I dont think he was very used to 4/4 time, in fact. And I was one of those people who dug in and said, Im not going to play blues. We had a lot of musical integrity and held tightly to our ideals.

But it wasnt like we were just jamming with no point. Everything had to matter. You had to play parts; you had to know what you were doing."

The Yes Album is the third studio album by English progressive rock band Yes, released on 19 February 1971 by Atlantic Records. It was the band's first album to feature guitarist Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks in 1970, as well as their last to feature keyboardist Tony Kaye until 1983's 90125.

The band spent mid-1970 writing and rehearsing new material at a farmhouse at Romansleigh, Devon, and the new songs were recorded at Advision Studios in London in the autumn. The album was the first by the band to feature all-original material. While the album retained close harmony singing, Kaye's Hammond organ, and Chris Squire's melodic bass, as heard on earlier releases, the new material also covered further styles including jazz piano, funk, and acoustic music. All of the band members contributed ideas, and tracks were extended in length to allow music to develop. Howe contributed a variety of guitar styles, including a Portuguese guitar, and recorded the solo acoustic guitar piece "Clap," live at the Lyceum Theatre, London on July 17, 1970.

The album was a critical success and a major commercial breakthrough for Yes, who had been at risk of being dropped by Atlantic due to the commercial failures of their first two albums. It reached number 4 in the United Kingdom and number 40 in the United States, and was later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for surpassing one million copies.[wiki]

Save for "A Venture" and "Starship Trooper," tracks 1-6 feature the original Yes Album line-up: Anderson, Bruford, Howe, Kaye, and Squire. In 1971, youth, talent, and drive made Yes's concerts staggeringly energetic. Although their recording process-building songs piece by piece, movement by movement-is well documented, early on and throughout the 1970s, Yes was an extraordinary live band.

We open with YIND, the first half of wich is fairly sedate and then at the first instrumental break, Steve Howe's slashing guitar takes command. Howe then performs "Clap," this version includes a short nod to Mason Williams' "Classical Gas." "Starship Trooper" wasn't performed live until December 1972-this track taken from the opening concert of 1973 in Tokyo, Japan, with Wakeman and White. "I've Seen All Good People" is Yes's "Shiny Happy People" though the song's early incarnations lacked Lennon's "All we are saying..." tagline during the chorus. "A Venture" wasn't performed live until the 2010s-this performance with Jon Davison on lead vocals. We close with a killer 1971 performance of "Perpetual Change."

The bonus tracks begin with the Boston 1977 YIND performance with Howe again tearing it up followed by the unique 2003 Melbourne "Clap" performance on electric guitar. The 2004 Monterey "Starship Trooper" performance represents the final time the classic 5 line-up played this incredible song. The 2004 "All Good People" performance includes the "give Peace a chance" line during the chorus. And, we end with the first live performance (according to Forgotten Yesterdays) of "Perpetual Change."

A word about compilations: This compilation is diguised as an album. I put together these performances for my personal enjoyment, and share them for the same reason. There are many Yes compilations available; "Wondrous Stories," "Ultimate Yes: 35th Anniversary Collection" and "Word Is Live." This collection is not meant to replace, but complement, the official releases. Nothing beats the original tracks themselves.

I urge you to seek out the torrented performances contained herein (theyre all available out there). Thanks to the tapers, uploaders and all who share this great music. And, of course, thank you to Yes.

Enjoy,
