[FURTHER REMASTERING NOTES >] Mk2 corrected speed somewhat but this Mk4 has more precise speed adjustments, tho' a few songs had slightly unclear readings. Mk2 did some EQ and possibly applied slight NR (not sure). This Mk4 remaster has extensive EQ work & is a bit loud but MUCH more natural sounding. NO NR was used on this Mk4, so there is a tad of hiss in some spots but it is not intrusive, though "Thunderbird was slightly more muffled than the rest of the tape & the added high end made it hissier than the rest of the tape. Bass remains a bit low as adding more created some remastering cleanup issues, however... you can turn it up some on your stereo without real issues. *MONO/STEREO - One uploader said the master AUD tape was mono, however a mono channel inversion test & other factors indicated very narrow stereo originally (unless sidewindersf EQ'd the channels separately - tho' other indicators like the continually wandering channel offset & different clapping, also seem to confirm stereo). In addition, the stereo imaging that was there definitely created some undesireable artifacts & distortion, so a decision was made to use the better R channel ONLY - after patches from the L channel during remastering. Essentially the stereo was so narrow it sounded like mono before, and now it is mono which greatly improved the quality. Since this is taken from only one channel, the file sizes are now smaller.

[>] Due to the lack of listenable early ZZ Top recordings, it seems important to dabble with improvements on what we have on occasion. For me, the band was very enjoyable thru sometime in '75, but mind-boggling circa '72-73. We have yet to hear the ultimate "Tres Hombres" live recording, but surely there are a few out there that haven't sweated their way to the surface - a pity. Anyway, by this time "Fandango!" material was overrunning their sets, but the band was playing much of "Tres Hombres" (which took some time to get off the ground after its release). "Tres" had changed their whole scene & really pushed them into new limelights. What is a pity is the "Tres Hombres" songs had been played so much by simmer '74 that to me they feel powerful but changed & rushed here at times, tho' MUCH of this set sounds speeded out - the energy level is HIGH & it is a unique performance in our limited selection of live recordings of this vintage. While this audience knew some of the cover songs, almost half their set was likely unfamiliar to most people in attendance. Sorta strange that the audience doesn't respond more here to the well-known 1969 Fleetwood Mac song, but times were changing. At any rate, the Mk1/Mk2/Mk3 versions sound like they were taped thru a hollow tube & I find it quite hard to listen to an entire song. This version brings the recording into a whole new light, the sound is now punchy & VERY enjoyable for the most part. See what you think- keep in mind it improves after the first song. It really helps to have the claps removed & whistles lowered - not too many distractions anymore - it's kick-ass! "Everybody's sayin' that music is love. Put on your colors and run come see." (DC). Enjoy the sounds. TRIPnTIME [\\]
