Another Jackal Production Vol 22: ZZ Top 2019-01-22 Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, Santa Rosa, CA
This was my fifth time seeing ZZ Top. Previous shows were all large venue events: Cow Palace, Arco Arena (twice) & Spartan Stadium. I jumped at the chance to see the Top in a smaller venue... LBC seats 1681. Santa Rosa is a couple hours from Sacramento so this venue wasn't really on my radar (that oversight has since been resolved!) . Also, tickets for shows there are sold through their own box office instead of Ticketmaster/Live Nation so the original on sale completely slipped by me. Original tix were already sold out when I found out about the show so I had to go through Stubhub. The only thing available by that time was standing room only. There are 48 numbered circles painted on the carpet behind the top row of balcony seats... so it's basically assigned SRO for 48 ticketholders. But hey, at least I had a ticket!!
Several weeks later on a random Sunday night, while lying in bed thinking about the upcoming work week, for some random reason I decided to check back with Stubhub. Whaddya know, a block of 4 tix in the FIRST ROW of the balcony had gone up for sale! I grabbed one of the four immediately and put up my SRO ticket for sale, which sold at a slight premium in a day or so - a nifty little exchange. Fast forward to the night of show. While waiting for the beards to take the stage I start chatting with the loud drunken group next to me... the ones who bought the other 3 tickets from Stubhub. They were there celebrating the birthday of a friend who was the 4th in their party. Since there were only 3 seats together (me owing the 4th!), they had to get him the single SRO ticket that was listed... my former ticket! Small world! They were drinking tequila from a flask and getting pretty lit before the show even started. When the band took the stage, they were up & dancing & making a drunken ruckus... much to the displeasure of the people seated behind them. So much so that somebody actually got the attention of the usher and, after the group belligerently refused to sit down & chill, they were thrown out... much to the PLEASURE of the people around me! You can hear the commotion during the first song. I still wonder if they forced the SRO birthday boy to also leave early or if they just hung out in the parking lot drinking until the show was over.
Great show & fun time!! Once the drunkies were gone, being at the front of the balcony with empty seats on one side of me, the recording came out fine despite the raucous crowd. Includes the show page from the 2018/19 LBC program + the SF Chronicle pink section listing & some crappy pics taken with my crappy iPhone 8.
Enjoy!!
