Both the Zawinul Syndicate and John McLaughlin's Free Spirits were on the bill together at Umbria Jazz in 1995. Joe Z and John had a mutual admiration society, and it's not much of a stretch to find Joe inviting John to sit in for part of this. The happy result for us is that it was documented so well. There are clips of this on youtube, and this has also been up here in shorter form (7 tracks, as opposed to the 9 here; and 73 minutes as opposed to nearly 80 minutes here). It's been shared as an FM or soundboard, but it's also been suggested that this might originate in video form.
Barkndog first had it running on EZT and mr mags had it going again in 2015. Since that's 10 years ago, and I'm clearing out cd-r's, this seems like a good time to bring this version back for another run. I can't recall who had sent it to me in a pre-DIME days trade, but many thanks to them. Nothing was done to the files I had for this share, as it all seemed to be tracked well, and it sounded great (check samples).
For some reason, this particular version of the Syndicate didn't release any albums. Fareed Haque is an excellent player, but the albums around this time featured either Randy Bernsen or Gary Poulson on guitar. Haque did release material under his own name and went on into the jam band cicuit with Garaj Mahal, which included McLaughlin's former bassist Kai Eckhardt. Zawinul also cycled through bassists and percussionists pretty quickly. Garrison had been with himon the My People album, but went off with McLaughlin into the Heart of Things soon after this, and Tuncboyacian had also been on My People, but then went off to do other things outside the Syndicate. Only Paco Sery, from the band Sixun, continued with Zawinul for any length of time.
Finally, I'm not totally sure of the setlist. The previous shares here didn't include one, and what I have included was taken from a Japanese boot house's website that offers this for sale (hiss and boo to them). If anyone knows of a need to correct anything, please indicate that in the comments below.
