I missed getting tickets for the Mountain Winery show on August 13 so when this
was announced I had to grab it. Steel Pulse is one of my favorites and I try and
catch them each time through. Last year I saw the double bill with Ziggy Marley
I arrived early especially since this was a new venue for me and didn't know the
routine. While I was waiting for the doors to open the person who was in charge
of security comes out and starts listing the "no's". I recogize him, he was the
guy who busted me at Steel Pulse Kaiser 1991 when a friend's ex-wife who worked
security outed me. He didn't recognize me fortunately. All was easy and got to
my seat ten minutes before the music started.
Steel Pulse comes out and is on fire.
Definitely a solid, but too short performance. The two seats to my right are empty
so I am dead center. During Hands Up Don't Shoot a guy comes by holding a drink,
smelling like a bar comes in and and tells me I am in his seat. You can hear him
unfortunately. Aside from that, the crowd isn't bad, the sound was great and the
mix was bass heavy. Somewhat of a different set list compared to the last time I
saw then in June.
Between sets the crowd comes in a bit and two women sit behind me. Ziggy Marley
and his band come out. Just like Steel Pulse, great sound and a band on fire. The
seats in front of me are open then in the two rows in front of that there are two
couple sitting one in front of the other. During the music they are having a
conversation like they were at a bar of restaurant. Between songs the women are
screaming. Not concert screaming but the plane is going to crash, we are all going
to die screaming. Luckily they are behind me. A few songs in a big fat dude wearing
sunglasses in the dark grabs the seats(s) in front of me and starts dancing wildly.
Arms flying and people giving him space. A few songs in the screamer behind me
starts tapping my shoulder while the music is playing. I move she does it again.
After the third time I turn around and give her a dirty look and turn back to music.
Turns out she is trying to get fat dude's attention to tell him he was in the wrong
seat and he should be next to them. He then turns around and pushes me aside to
talk to them. I tell him to turn around and stfu. Fortunately he does. Over the
course of the set others next to him left so he wasn't in front of me. At one point
his swinging arm his me in the stomach but he sort of moved right after that. By
the end of the set I had a perfect view of the stage and really enjoyed the set. I
always like when he does his father's songs. It is like he is channeling Bob. Since
they had a 10:30 curfew there really wasn't an encore but the last song was a newer
song called Fly Rasta where two of Ziggy's kids came out. His son, I'd say 7 or 8
played persussion (hit a cymbal) and his daughter maybe 3 or 4 was dancing. Both
had headphones on. His daughter was smiling and watching her dad and he was watching
her. It was a classic moment.
