boombox's notes november 2006:
This was the second of Joe's shows at Somerton the same day, part
of what was locally being billed as 'Joe Fest', the first show having
been a special tribute to Woody Guthrie. This evening show was a
complete sell-out, but unfortunately the tickets weren't bought by
music fans. It appears that whenever this venue holds something,
people just use it as an excuse to drink later than usual and chat
to their friends, which they did very loudly right through the show.
You will hear a few music fans at several points asking these
ignorant peasants to shut up. (No, I wasn't one, as I was stood
directly behind the taper, but man, was I tempted!!)
This obviously had a negative effect on the show, which turned into
a medley of crowd pleasers only, rather than the usual mix of stuff
Joe picks from his back catalogue.
That said, Joe still delivers a solid set, with the added bonus(??)
of a special guest at the end. As well as John, who is well known to
the UK contingent, Joe is joined by Chris (brother of Mick) Jagger on
washboard and sort-of-backing vocals. The plan had been to just do
Fixin' To Die, but I suggested John ask Joe to do Tricky Dicky too, as
it would fit the line-up well, so was chuffed when they did it. At the
end of the show, you hear someone suggesting Joe might come back later.
He didn't. He told me afterwards he was going back to his hotel room
to read his book!!
Special thanks too, must go to local guitarist Dez Moore, who made a
herculean effort beforehand to help Joe get a half decent sound from
the PA as the sound guy wasn't exactly the most helpful.
Enjoy, pass it on, but keep it lossless!!!
