Noteworthy Other Ones

This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Cryptical Envelopment
and The Other One played by the Grateful Dead. It is a revision of a
collection originally circulated on eTree in February, 2009.

The original collection was closely based on a list put together by
Eric Wybenga and published in his book _Dead To The Core: An Almanac
of the Grateful Dead_. This revised collection includes sources from
Eric's list that were omitted from the original collection because I
did not believe I should seed them at eTree. It drops some of the
versions I used to "replace" versions I didn't think I could seed. It
also adds other versions that were recommended in the comments on the
original collection, as well as versions that I thought should be
added. Not all the great Other Ones are here -- 70-02-13, for
instance, is in the "Noteworthy Dark Stars" collection. Remember,
"noteworthy" does not mean "best". I welcome your ideas about what
should be included or dropped from the collection. There could easily
be a version 3.

Early on, Cryptical and The Other One would be played alone in
shows. In those cases, they stand alone here. Since 1969, these songs
have almost always occured as part of longer jams, and so, mostly I've
included longer jams in this collection. I've looked for natural
places to start and end the jams, balancing a desire to avoid musical
violence and a desire to keep the total size of the collection
manageable.

The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the
performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs
included in the track. The music in these tracks is exactly the same
as the music from the source indicated by the SHNID. When necessary, I
joined the songs into jams using "shntool join", I snipped white space
from the end of the tracks and sometimes added fades using WaveLab
6.0, and then I compressed the files using "flac --best". I used
shntool version 3.0.9 and flac version 1.2.1.

If you have the first version of this collection, you should be able
to leech over it and only grab the changes: you'll have to rename the
old tracks first, as I've had to use six-digit SHNIDs i this version
of the project.
